Have you ever used a product for years and years and thought, Theres no way this product will ever change because what could possibly be done to make it better? I have many times. Sometimes it seems that inventing a better version of a standard product seems impossible. Sometimes it seems as though improvements that manufacturers make of a standard product doesnt improve the product at all. I find, as I get older, that I generally want a replacement of a product to be the same as the one I have and am used to using. However, Rubbermaid has shown me that improvements to standard items can be accomplished and that you can make a good thing even better.
The Rubbermaid Hip Hugger Laundry Basket is one of these improved products that really make a difference. Doing laundry is not on my top five list of things I enjoy doing. (Actually doing laundry is not even in my top 100 things I enjoy doing.) I have constantly, over the years, tried to find ways to make this household job easier and faster to accomplish. Even though I dont enjoy the job, it really isnt all that difficult to do with todays technology. I often feel guilty when I complain because I do remember how laundry was a real chore for my mother. When I was growing up she had a wringer washer for many years. Monday was always laundry day. It took the whole day to accomplish this job. She would roll the washer up to the sink (the washer was on rollers) and then wash the clothes; wring them through a winding wringer; and then take them to the laundry lines strung outside in the backyard and hang up the clothes to dry. Once they were dry, she would either fold them as she took them down from the line or bring them in (in a wicker laundry basket) and fold them and put them away. Mom is eighty and now has an electric washing machine and dryer but often hangs some of her things outside during the summer. Old habits die hard, although she does really enjoy the conveniences of doing laundry today compared to yesterdays.
Although there is nothing that equals the smell of clothing dried outside on a clothesline, Im glad that doing laundry has become much more simple today. I have made laundry easier for myself by making sure I have good machines. Also, when we built our house, we had them design the laundry room to be upstairs by the bedrooms and that saves a whole lot of running up and down the stairs. Our house is a colonial, two story house, with a walk out basement. It would have been a lot harder to take all the laundry from the upstairs down two flights of stairs to the basement. And, the third thing I did to make washing clothes easier was to purchase good equipment to do the job. We have numerous clothes hampers that have removable, netted bags which means I can just dump the clothes into the washer. We have one hamper for whites and one for colored clothes so I dont even have to sort them before I load them into the washer. The other really important laundry tool is the laundry basket(s).
Ive tried various kinds of laundry baskets and have found the perfect one. It is the Rubbermaid Hip Hugging Laundry Basket. You can fill it with clothes and one side snuggles and fits to your hip as you carry it from room to room. This is a great feature that Rubbermaid (and others have copied) has incorporated in some of their laundry baskets and one that I insist on having to make my life easier. Ive given them to others as presents (I filled one with household items for each of my kids when they left home) and gave one to my mom because it is hard for her to carry even laundry from room to room using the other kinds of baskets on the market. (She long ago replaced the heavy wicker one she used.)
The Laundry Basket
Rubbermaid has produced many products that I like. I like that their products are made well and last a long time. This laundry basket fits this description. It is made of a sturdy (yet somewhat pliable) plastic. It is manufactured in many colors in case you wish to match a laundry room décor. Mine is white with contrasting gray handles. I have had it for about 5 years and it is still like new.
What is unique about the design of this product is its shape. It is oblong and holds at least a bushel (or a couple loads) of clothes. One side of the basket has a curve to it. This curve rests on your hip if you carry it with one hand on your side. If you carry it in front of you, the curve rests on your belly. Other baskets are just kind of out there in front of you and its hard to carry it on one side. I like carrying it on my hip when I need to carry things up and down the stairs because the basket doesnt get in my line of vision so Im less likely to trip. And, because Im resting it on my hip it doesnt seem as heavy or bulky to carry.
The handles are smooth (I hate the cheap ones that cut into your hands) and rounded to give you a better grip. All parts of the basket are smooth and there arent any jagged pieces that snag clothing inside the basket and they arent there to snag the clothing you are wearing as you carry the basket either. The less expensive ones Ive purchased all had places that allowed clothes to get caught or snagged. There are three handles. Theres one handle on each side for carrying the basket in front of you; and one on the opposite side of the curve to use when carrying it on your hip.
Because this basket is lightweight and well balanced, you can use it to carry other things as well. I often load it up with things to take to my classroom or at the end of the year to bring home things from my classroom. I also have used it to carry student lunches when weve gone on field trips that involve bringing a classroom full of lunches. The uses for this product are as endless as your imagination and needs.
This is one product that I highly recommend and one that I know youll be using for many years to come. Enjoy!
