Big Game & SafetyJan 24 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Be safe and save your hide as well as others. Well, it's year 2002 and my son is on a roll again. He's killed 7 deer this year at the age of 16. The biggest buck he has gotten so far is a 7 pointer. This is his favorite sport and he can't wait every year for the season to get started. He's an avid hunter but very careful at his skill in hunting. He's been hunting every since he was about 12 years old and has been enjoying every since. He dresses and eats everything that he kills. Which we have always told him whatever he kills, he was going to eat it. So far he does and really loves the taste of venison. We bought him a survival kit to carry in his backpack just for emergencies. ( You never know when something bad will happen! ) We taught him to be very cautious and alert when hunting. We've told him never to shoot at something unless he knows for sure what it is he's aiming at. We've also told him to keep an eye out for other hunters, make sure that they see you. He carries his gun unloaded until he gets to the destination that he's going and then he loads it. I've always told him, ( better safe than sorry ). This is basically what we got him for a survival kit. Drinking container ( usually we buy him a couple of 20 oz. plastic water bottles.) Waterproof matches and a lighter. ( You never know when they may need to start a fire.) A cellular phone ( in case of emergency) A pocket knife Snake bit kit Some kind of rope First aid kit Some snacks ( in case he gets lost and hungry ) A compass That's basically what all he takes with him. These are some of the things we make him do before he goes hunting.Tell us where he's going and he is planning on returning home. That way we won't get worried till it gets past the time that he says he's going to back. I make sure he carries enough water and food to get thru however long he stays.I use to have to make sure he wore the proper kind of hunting clothes before he left, but after I have nagged him in prior years about, he does it on his on now. We made him build a fire, so we would know that he knew how to build one should he ever have to. We have always told him to pay close attention to the path that he goes on in case he ever got lost. If he was to get lost, try to back step the way he came.(look for his old footprints or things that he would remember) We told him if he had ever got lost to find shelter and not to panic.Try to call us and give us the location in which he went. Find some dried wood and make a fire to keep warm and maybe for us to see the fire. Also we told him to carry extra bullets in case he has to shoot some up in the air for us to locate him. If you have a young kid like mine who loves to hunt, try to teach him how to be cautious and aware.Sometimes us grown-ups can learn some things from them as well. Happy hunting!! |
