A Canadian in IndiaJan 28 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Adventure and travel well worth it India can be wonderful and exotic but if your not prepared and do not realize that things are very, very different it can be a nightmare. I'll leave out the story of an engineer who had to work there and wound up locking himself in his hotel room for three months. First off if this is your first experience with India be prepared for the most clashing images of riches and poverty. Yes, you will walk along the street over beggars and the dying as Mercedes whiz by. Yes, you will in some places be repulsed and then a short few minutes later be amazed. Yes, you will be rushed by every con man within a mile as you walk around but you will meet some extraordinary and wonderful people. It is not for the faint of heart and you will come back with a very different view of the world after you go. Do not have a western style itinerary with actually thinking anything is on time. Give yourself a lot of rest between destinations and be very flexible. If you can head to a good hotel and just rest. I would recommend taking a good water purifier, padlock, bathtub plug, good rucksack and please check your health on a regular schedule. Power goes out quite often so make sure your flashlight is good and have extra batteries. Take Imodium and painkillers, and any other prescriptions you need and do not forget toilet paper. If I can recommend something it is to do as most people do in India. Use your left hand for all opening of doors, touching rails etc... and use your right for eating. Trust me on this one. Also wash up a lot and often with soap. Besides the basics of travel I also found a good idea was to have a door stopper to secure less than perfect hotel doors from the inside. If you’re taking anti-malarial pills make it your religion to take it. I found Bombay to be quite the experience and if you can definitely head to Varanassi. The Lonely Planet guides are really the best. I guess the best advice to give anyone is taking your time and leave your ideas of western culture at the door. It really is hard sometimes travelling there but well worth it. You will find it an amazing place. |
