~Glassy Glosses and Steamy Stains~

Jan 28 '02

The Bottom Line ~Glosses and Stains are meant to be temporary and light. Stop trying to make them something they're not.~

What makes the perfect outfit perfect? Perfection within one's makeup. I have long been a proponent of good makeup, and I certainly remain one to this day. One of my tips is: If you have a 'best feature' show it off!! Some of my favorite features are my eyes, cheekbones and lips. For the purpose of this review, we'll stick to lips.

Lip preparation should not be difficult, nor should it be equated with rocket science. A few tips that I have found helpful through the years are:

1. Keep your body H2O'd. Do so by drinking plenty of water. It doesn't matter how much you moisturize from the outside, if you're dehydrated on the inside, you're going to have to drown yourself in moisturizer for it to have any long term effect.

2. Keep your lips soft and moisturized. Do so by sleeping with a lip protectant on. (Blistex DCT®, Chapstick... so on....)

3. Keep your lips safe. Do so by never leaving the house without a lip-screen on. The skin on your lips is by far some of the most sun-sensitive skin on your body. Who on earth wants to lose their lips to skin-cancer if they could just throw sun-screen on them instead.

4. Keep your lips smoke-free. One of the most painful things to see is a female smoking. It's disgusting for one, and they always seem to get the 'attractive' smoke lines around their lips. Women, if you're wondering why your lipstick keeps bleeding, look at what is going into your mouth. Cancer-sticks give those 'pucker lines' that a lipstick loves to creep into.

Well, I must say that I don't have any secrets on how to keep glosses on for a long time, or how to keep stains from bleeding if you DO have fine lines around your lips. I DO know that I have always taken it for granted that glosses and stains are not permanent OR long term. So, that being said, I'll tell you what I DO know.

I use a lot of Clinique® glosses and a lot of lip protectants AS glosses. One thing I have found, is that to make my own semi-long term stain, I use my lip brush and a tube of long-wear lipstick along with some DCT® over the top. Not only do you get a light tint, but you get an awesome moisturizer to boot. I don't really favor the glosses that are flavored, it reminds me of Primary school and it just isn't my deal. If it's yours, that's great. I just personally leave the grape/strawberry/ electric bleu-razzberry-watermelon-PIÑA COLADA-Daisy chain flavors for my 16 yr. old sister.

Now, with my Clinique®, Bath & Body Works® and generic glosses I usually don't line my lips. I know tons of people who do, and it works for them, I just choose not to. It's a bit harsh and my desired effect is to look as un-made as possible while wearing makeup. In my opinion, glosses are made to be light and temporary.

So, what do I do?

1. I wash my face.
2. I use my DCT® or Burt's Bees® lip-screen.
3. I put on my sunscreen (Bull Frog® or Clinique® SPF 30+)
4.*I put on my makeup. (optional)
5. I re-apply my lip-screen
6. I put on my lip-gloss.

I am a complete gloss junkie. Pots, tubes, wands... everything. Some women collect makeup, some shoes, some magazines... I collect glosses. I have them in every colour imaginable (yes, including black-light sensitive, white, blue and black). I like Clinique® glosses because I don't like breakouts around my lips. Like I've said, they're one of my best features.

Are your lips one of your best features? If so, play them up. Be flirty. Stop trying to cover them up with all of this long-last stuff. Take the time to re-apply every so often. Have fun with your lips. And if your lips aren't one of your favorite features, maybe it's time that you tried to play around with colour and gloss. Why spend all of your time trying to make everything so permanent. Makeup should be as light as possible. One should never cover their natural beauty with a lot of gunk just because some rep at the Estee Lauder/ Elizabeth Arden/ MAC/ _____ (insert crap here) counter told them it is what is "pop". Stop trying to go for the trends and start going for the things that look best on you.

~Do you have a great smile? If not, don't you think it's about time?~

~Baby.... smile!~
