There's a common thread that runs through the well-known movie The Wizard Of Oz and the lesser-known but excellent movie (co-starring Shirley Temple) called The Bluebird.
In the first one, Dorothy and Toto--eventually, along with a scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion--take a risky journey to the Land of Oz to find what would be waiting for them "over the rainbow."
In the second one, two young children--a sister and brother--set off with their cat and dog in search of a bluebird.
In both cases, what was supposedly waiting over the rainbow and the bluebird symbolized happiness.
By the end of each movie, the characters came to find out that happiness awaited them right in their own homes and had been there all along--they just hadn't been looking in the right places!
This theme also has a strong thread running through what is probably my favorite all-time movie: It's A Wonderful Life.
And so it goes with looking for a great indie film with an amusing, talented cast. You can find the talent right here at Epinions.com, because our own Candice923--who has, to date, written 376 Epinions with a promise of more to come!--has written, directed, and co-starred in an entertaining story called WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT.
One of her supporting cast and crew members is another one of our Epinionators, Dionne25, who also happens to be Can's very best friend of over a decade. Dionne hasn't written that many Epinions lately--though I'm sure she'll return when there's a lull in her studies--but she has, to date, written 161. She also takes smashing photos.
For more details about the movie, cast, and crew, I'll be giving you a couple of URLs at the end of this Epinion.
For now, I'm going to give you an enticing, little peek, and let you draw your own conclusions re: (1) WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT and (2) . . .We'll discuss issue #2 a little later. . .
This film opens with the focus on some sort of textured, blue tapestry that turns out to be a bedspread.
The view widens to show a wide bed with a couple of people in it sleeping soundly, though restlessly, and facing away from each other.
The room has the glow of an early morning about it.
Before long, they roll back towards each other.
Soon, they're caressing each other in their half-asleep state and, eventually, kissing.
Suddenly, they simultaneously rip themselves away from each other and fall out of opposite sides of the bed.
Their near-hysterical "Who are you!?!"s gives away that they're perfect strangers who have somehow ended up sleeping together in this strange bed in this pig-sty of a room and that they have no idea how they got there but each feels the other one is to blame.
He is wearing nothing but boxer shorts. She is wearing dark pantyhose with a huge run in them, a pair of boxer shorts, and a man's shirt.
Right before they began to compare notes to try to figure out how they ended up together, this scene fades to the opening shots of the movie (complete with a melancholy theme song of a laid-back jazz nature) showing them running errands around town and, at one point, going opposite directions on a crosswalk like ships passing in the night.
Neither of them looks too happy.
As the plot of the movie unfolds, conversations with their roomies (Mindy and Joe) let viewers of this film in on what's causing them to act so blue.
They both have been dumped by their significant others and have pretty much lost interest in everything but studying.
Mindy and Joe each think that Sarah and Danny (the leading couple who ended up in bed together) have been grieving for their lost loves too long and need to lighten up and have some fun.
They are both determined to get their friends to have fun if it's the last thing that they do.
"Fun" just happens to be going to the last big frat bash of the year and playing daring games involving overindulgence in alcohol.
Sarah, especially, doesn't hold her liquor very well--probably, because she has downed close to fifty drinks at last count that night--and both looks and acts really silly instead of like her usual, more dignified self.
Toss in the antics of a co-ed who gets into a mini-catfight with Sarah when she puts the make on her date and a big, interesting teddy bear of a guy from Iowa nicknamed Freshie (who reminds me of a mix of Gomer Pyle, Forrest Gump, Rose Nyland, and myself--and is actually based on a good friend of Can's from her days at George Washington University, where she was in undergraduate school at the time she made the movie) who is a pledge who likes a little (or should I say a LOT) of milk with his beer, and the stage is further set for Sarah and Danny to end up in bed together.
But HOW?????????????????????????. . .
Do you think I'm about to tell you that? NO WAY!!!
If you want to find out, you're just going to have to order WHLN from Can at:
Candice923@aol.com
For postage, handling, and everything, it cost me well under ten dollars. Of course, I was not only the first one to buy a copy but I also told Can that I would review it for her. Therefore, I might have gotten a discount.
Even so, Can doesn't plan to have people taking out loans to buy this film. She's very excited about getting it out to a wider audience.
Also, I'm not sure what all means she has for people paying. I simply wrote her a personal check and sent it by snail-mail to an address that she provided.
I would urge you to get in touch with her, though, as I know you'd really like this movie.
Before I sign off, let me give you a few more of its selling points:
(1) The body-language is very realistic and quite expressive (Think: casts of I Love Lucy, All In The Family, and Mama's Family.).
(2) Great storyline--did I already mention that!?!
(3) Wonderful soundtrack with music that has both melody and wide-appeal.
(4) Perfect casting.
(5) Lots of scenic photography.
(6) Creative ways to get this couple into bed together--keep in mind that I didn't say creative ways of getting this couple to have sex together! Nor am I putting my stamp of approval on the steps leading to their togetherness (in the sack, at least).
(7) Creative--goosebump-raising--ways of showing (even before they met) that these two brokenhearted college students might not have to look very far to find bluebirds over the rainbow and that it could be a wonderful life for them once again!
If you would like to read excerpts from the original script--which was written as a stage play when Can was a sophomore in college--you can go to Can's profile page at WrittenByMe and look for a distribution of the various scenes from the play throughout the index of what she's written there.
This is the URL:
http://www.writtenbyme.com/member/candice923
Her index also contains excerpts from at least two novels she's working on, plus a lot of other great reads.
But keep in mind that these script excerpts--which have been revised somewhat when WHLN was made into a movie--only BEGIN to tell this delightful story, and this is something that should be watched to make it totally real and imaginable!
If you would like to get more information about the cast, crew, etc., here's a URL you might want to go to:

Parents:
First let me warn you that there are some incidents of foul language in this movie--though, actually, a lot less than in most PG-13 movies.
Now that I've told you that, I think you might find WHLN to be something good for those of you with teenagers to watch as a family and discuss, as it gives the viewer an idea what it's like when you drink to excess and what might happen to you--and what might really happen could very well make this movie look like a cakewalk.
I can also see this film being shown on indie stations, places such as MTV and as a short feature (it runs a little over an hour) to go with the main feature shown at the cinema.
Remember when I said early in this review:
"For now, I'm going to give you an enticing, little peek, and let you draw your own conclusions re: (1) WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT and (2) . . .We'll discuss issue #2 a little later. . ."
Well--other than saying to be watching my profile page, as I plan to be writing some other related articles to go with this one and will have links to this and them posted when that happens--I'm now going to wrap this up, still letting you draw your own conclusions re: WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT--as well as What might happen later. . .
update!. . . . . . .Update!!. . . . . . .UPDATE!!!. . . . . . .
WOW!!! Can has just left this comment in my comment section! I'm making a copy of it here so it won't be missed--along with BOLDFACING the other names of castmembers who also also Epinionate. . .
Thanks, AJ!
Your review was wonderful. I'm going to send it to all of the cast members that I possibly can. By the way, there are some other Epinionators that were involved in this production: Riley0623 (She played Mindy), Notguerrero (she played Meghan) ShaunB2000 (He played Greg) and Aaronr99 (he played Danny). Thank you so much for putting up this review.
As for those interested in purchasing it, it's only a mere $8!
Love,

The "turkey" is all out on the table, so you know what you're talking about: $8, same as I was charged! I thought Can might want to charge a little more, so I didn't give that quote when I wrote this originally.
Anyway, this movie is worth the price--and then some!!! :o)
P.S. After using the term "turkey," it occurred to me that it might be misinterpreted! I was talking about "talking turkey," which means deciding on cost and not describing the movie. This movie is no turkey!!! It doesn't even come close!!!
