Top 10 Games
Feb 02 '02 (Updated Jun 23 '03)
The Bottom Line These choices are the best video games available in my opinion. No gamer should go without at least playing these.
I started playing games in the days of the NES when my parents bought it and forced me to try it. I immediately got hooked on Super Mario Bros. and my video game addiction grew from there. I moved on to the SNES and loved it, but the N64 forced me to abandon consoles and move on to the PC gaming world, which is now my primary source of gaming. A purchase of the PS2 almost made me quit console gaming for good, but thankfully the Gamecube renewed my trust in the console gaming marked. And now for my favorite games I have played...
10. Super Metroid
-This game is simply the best side scrolling game I have ever played. This amazing adventure game lets you wander wherever you want to in search of your goal, you are not force fed down a linear path. This style of gameplay lends itself to a lot of backtracking, but it doesn't detract from the gameplay at all. This game made me into a true Metroid fan. Hands down the best SNES game I have ever played (I'm a huge fan of the SNES, so that is saying quite a bit).
9. Max Payne
-If you are a fan of John Woo or Chow Yun Fat and wish for a game somewhat similar to those movies at leas in terms of action, you should give this game a try. Diving around with style has never been this much fun, and bullet time adds a lot more strategy to the game than most action games have. It may be a third person game, but if you are a fan FPS games, you will feel at home with this game.
8. Master of Orion II
-A classic strategy game that I can always go back to when I'm bored. This is one of the few strategy games that I will play, and it can keep me entertained for hours at a time, but it still is fun playing the next day or even a year from now. Unfortunately I have not played the original which is said to be much better than this, so maybe it will replace this game.
7. Curse of Monkey Island
-My vote for second funniest game I've ever played (scroll down to number 4 to see the funniest). This adventure game marked Lucasarts peak in gaming, and everything started going downhill from here This game had length and oozed with style...and some other things. Sam & Max is the only adventure game I have played that can match this game for strange puzzles and the weirdest jokes.
6. No One Lives Forever
-An FPS with style that gives you a choice how you want to play. You can sneak around, and use stealth to avoid detection. Or if you want to just blow stuff up and can run through the whole game just shooting everything (except for a few forced stealth areas). This game had some very interesting situations (like falling out of an airplane without a parachute) that no game can duplicate. It's got humor and great gameplay!
5. System Shock 2
-An amazing blend of FPS and RPG genres, that will keep you up playing in the dark. The spooky atmosphere is best experienced while playing in the middle of the night with no lights on. Also one of the few FPS games that has a good co-op mode. It also does hacking better than any other game I've played (especially Deus Ex).
4. Sam And Max: Hit the Road
-The funniest game I have ever played. The Sam & Max comic books are a piece of art (and almost impossible to find now), and this game really does justice to those comics. My only real complaint is that the game is really short. But quality is much more important than quantity. I sure hope the sequel can live up to this game.
3. Fallout/Fallout 2
-My favorite role playing game series. Fallout and Fallout 2 give you a break from all of the fantasy role playing games and places you into a nuclear post-apocalyptic future, with a truly great role playing experience. You can make your character however you want to, including being evil. This is the closest game to pen and paper role-playing I have ever played, and it actually has an interesting story, though character development is up to the player, which may disappoint console RPG fans.
2. Half-Life
-Half-Life provides an amazing trip through the Black Mesa complex, which you really feel like you are going through, not just some character. Half-Life is the first game that truly immersed me into its amazing world, with a revolutionary way of telling its story without the use of annoying cutscenes that break up the action, and take you out of the game. The gameplay was a lot of fun, and the enemies were actually intelligent, and worked together efficiently. Everyone should own this game.
1. Metroid Prime
-Metroid Prime has managed to take the "best game ever" crown away from Half-Life in my mind, something I didn't think a game would do until either Half-Life 2 or Team Fortress 2 came out. Metroid Prime carefully recreates the world of Metroid into 3D nearly flawlessly. The game offers much longer playtime than any previous Metroid title, but I was still desperate for more as soon as I finished and I started working on getting 100% collection rate of the items. This game will keep you playing over and over again. Truly a classic game that will be tough to beat. I will see if this will be pushed back on September 30th when Half-Life 2 launches.
Runner Ups.
Chrono Trigger, Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, Deus Ex, American McGee's Alice, Morrowind, Worms Series, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight.
Old Top Ten(And Why it changed)
10. Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
-I still believe this is an excellent game, but some balancing problems and the combat system keep it from being in my top 10.
9. System Shock 2
-I really started to appreciate this game a lot more.
8. Baldur's Gate Series
-I'm not really sure why this made my list last time. I didn't really enjoy the games that much. In fact I had to force myself to beat Baldur's Gate, and after my friend saved over my Baldur's Gate 2 file, I did not feel like working a half hour to get back to where I was from a previous save, and I have not played the game since.
7. Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
-I wish I could fit this on my list, but there are so many games that I feel are great and deserve to be on my list. This one just barely missed getting on my updated list.
6. Chrono Trigger
-This is the only console RPG I have ever liked, but unfortunately it just isn't quite as amazing as I remembered it originally. I still think it is an excellent game, just no good enough for my top ten.
5. Curse of Monkey Island
-A Few new games were added to my list that I had never played before and this just got bumped down the list a little.
4. Master Of Orion II
-Since I last played it I've found a few balancing problems that annoy me somewhat that keep this from being quite as good as I remembered.
3. Deus Ex
-This was a really fun game, but it has a few problems that keep it from being on the list. If i made the list slightly longer this would be either 11 or 12.
2. Fallout 2
-This stayed fairly close to the same place, just Metroid Prime bumped it back a notch. I also added Fallout, which is actually better than Fallout 2. It's inclusion keeps this from falling back another place.
1. Half-Life
-Still very close to being the best game of all time, but Metroid Prime barely edges out a victory in my opinion.
