I took my family on a long trip (vacation) in July and August to visit several friends and relatives. I'm always in need of finding the best deals and best prices, so I went shopping online for airline tickets and car rentals. If saving money is important to you, read on.
After extensive research at all the popular travel websites, plus all the sites of the individual car rental agencies, I chose to rent from Enterprise Rent-a-Car for the rental we needed in Charlotte, NC.
Enterprise has several branches in most cities, including most airports, so chances are that where ever you may be traveling, you will find and Enterprise branch nearby.
Here is what I did, and I hope this will help you save some money on your next trip.
I needed a car for 22 days in Charlotte. (We were actually spending most of our time in Georgia near Atlanta, but we were flying to Charlotte. You can read about that in my article about Northwest Airlines.)
Car rentals at the airport for an Intermediate-size vehicle were all between $800 and $1200 for 22 days in July. Just outside the airport within 10 miles there are many car rental places. Those outside the airport don't have to pay all those extra airport taxes, so they were all at least $300 cheaper. Enterprise happened to be the cheapest at that time.
Enterprise.com is their homepage, and is very easy to navigate. You can enter all necessary information online which can save you a good amount of time and paperwork when you go to get your car. I filled in all the info online, and just had to sign my name to get the car.
Enterprise has a "We will pick you up" service that they advertise. Unfortunately, they can't pick you up at the airport because that would be unfair to their branch at the airport. So we took a taxi for the 9 mile ride which cost us $36. For returning the car, we had the option of ordering a taxi again, or we could drop the car off at the airport for a $50 fee.
I guess it never hurts to ask if there can be exceptions to rules, because I called them up to inform them that I was planning on dropping the car off at the airport. That pretty much means that two of their employees have to make a trip to the airport to retrieve their car. So I asked them if I went ahead and returned the car to the same branch if they would give me a ride to the airport. After a moment's hesitation, they agreed.
We went to the airport, checked our luggage, and then I left my family safely at the airport while I returned the car. The lady who answered the phone at Enterprise was very helpful in giving me driving directions to their location, and they were very friendly at the counter when I arrived with the car. The gentleman who drove me back to the airport was very nice also.
I ended up saving over $300, including the taxi cost, over what I would have paid by just renting at the airport. I think the extra trouble and time it took was well worth the savings.
