I had been using GoDaddy.com to register my domain name for the past 2 years now. I originally selected them based on a recommendation from a friend & other websites recommending GoDaddy for domain registration needs. Plus they met my price range to register a domain ($10 or less).
Everything was fine. I renewed it last year in July with no issues.
Then this past year, when the renewal came up, I got the typical 40+ emails over the course of a couple months reminding me to renew. I renewed on July 1st, 2006 (expiration was the 31st). I chose paypal as my method of payment, printed the receipt with the confirmation number & thought it was over with.
Well when the expiration came around, it DID expire, did NOT renew & for some reason the paypal payment never went through on my account. I hadn't noticed this until it was already too late (past august 11th). I tried to log into my account, but my customer number no longer existed & there was no way to retrieve it via entering my email or domain name.
So I get on the phone to try to renew this domain once & for all. Strangely the lady on the phone said they had no record of my customer number being associated with that domain name, since the domain now belonged to "GoDaddy.com". She also informed me that I had to pay $80 to RELEASE the domain name (not including the actual $6.95 renewal) just to get my domain back!!! She said "you got many email messages reminding you to renew". I told her the confimration number from when I did renew....and surprise! DID NOT EXIST in their system.
I told her I was not going to pay $80 to renew a domain, considering my hosting only costs $40 a year (not with godaddy). She said "sorry, but it takes manpower to de-register a domain when it expires, thats why we have the fee". Um..ok? So you charge $6.95 for new registrar's..you have to use manpower to register them don't you? So why does de-registering a domain cost EIGHTY DOLLARS? She said her computer crashed, and then said "can you hold again? my computer just locked up". So I did...waited 20 minutes then hung up. Way to treat your customers eh?
Luckily, they release the domain name 30 days after the holding period so I will be getting my domain back September 10th, when they supposedly release it.
Either way. BE WARNED. GoDaddy will hold your domain if you don't renew it and try to blackmail you into paying $80. MAKE SURE it renews if you still use GoDaddy, or just switch services to a better registrar.
As far as their actual website. When I just went there recently to renew (back in july) I did notice how AWFUL it was. They have too many e-advertisements spamming up the screen. The fact they lost my customer number & the confirmation from my order should be a red flag for anyone considering using them. Coming from and IT field...that sort of thing is just unacceptable.
