Minor quibbles (Reply to this comment)

A small nit to pick: it's the Nyquist sampling theorem, not Nordquist.
I agree with you the difference is subtle, and probably not worth the price for most people. That said, SACD is becoming the standard format for audiophile classical music (as opposed to DVD-Audio). A minuscule market, to be sure.
For pop music, of course, any noise or distortion actually improves the signal to noise ratio, of course (that's geek humor for you...).

Much ado about nothing ... (Reply to this comment)

is the only way to describe SACD (and such a lengthy review of it). My wife and I just completed an AB comparison of record (LP) vs CD vs MP3 encoded at different bit rates. The various sources were piped through a Conrad Johnson amp and a pair of British speakers of obscure heritage.
We concluded that they all sounded great, but there were differences. The native CD's sounded best. On the records there was a noticeable accentuation of the bass and an attenuation of the high frequencies, but this may be due to the mastering. 320 kbps MP3 was almost indistinguishable from native CD, but 128 was noticeably degraded. You have to pay attention to notice the differences. In a moving car there's no way you could tell them apart.
The bottom line is CD is good enough, thank you. Save your money and go see some more live performances.

Right on the money! (Reply to this comment)

Great article on SACDs! I recently converted my entire 363-CD collection to MP3 (encoded at 192 Kbps onto 41 CD-Rs and 1 CD-RW for new songs).
I strongly believe that MP3s and the Internet, along with MP3-CD players and MP3 players with hard drives -- is the next *real* step in the future of music.
When ripped properly and encoded at 192 Kbps, there's no audible loss in sound quality on any stereo system (with the exception of ultra-expensive ones with Digital Surround). MP3s also exhibit phenomenal skip protection.
The future of music technology is very bright indeed. But at best, "Super Audio" will only be a lackluster attempt at it.

I didn't even KNOW about this new SACD format, and you knew it from the inside out! I'm impressed enough to hand out an MH. Keep it up!

Very impressive (Reply to this comment)

Hopefully this review will save lots of folks from wasting lots of dough to support yet another un-needed technological advance (that will primarily enrich a small group of audio software/hardware companies) A Very clear, well organized, well written, and thorough overview.
Another fine piece of work.

Exquisitely written and very well thought out. And you are right on the money as always. Very thorough and quite easy on the eyes. This one effortlessly earns the MH seal of approval.
