proavengers's Full Review: 2005 Ford Freestyle AWD
Normally, I wait for a debut model to prove itself on the road and garner a reputation. However, after a test drive, I was impressed enough to take my chances. Thus far, all the same reasons for buying the Freestyle last year are still valid. I've not yet been disappointed. I definitely wanted to get a family-car and a domestic model. The Ford Freestyle's design engineering borrows the best features from other types of vehicles to make an excellent "crossover" vehicle. It's got the casual sportiness of an SUV, but with lowered height as a car's. The maneuverability and suspension are like a car's. The space inside is like a mini-van's, but it's not as lengthy. It has large tires, stability and sturdiness like a truck's (my insurance company rates my Freestyle a "truck"). Also, the price is right; the outside looks great; it has seven seats (which fold flat to make extra cargo room); and my Freestyle has AWD (which I think may be standard). The Freestyle's CVT (continuously varying transmission) design is borrowed from Volvo's technology. And it's something I REALLY like. So smooth. I find that my Freestyle has plenty of acceleration to tackle high altitudes (without being a gas hog). Although, having AWD does reduce the MPG over all. I really enjoy my Ford Freestyle. Besides great handling on freeways, it totally excels at driving through snow in the mountains. But if you drive in snow conditions, you still have to take it slower--the AWD feature is only going to help in getting unstuck a bit easier. AWD can't prevent skidding and sliding on ice.
