The Review
Since the kids have all just gotten back in to school I thought it would be appropriate to do a review on the book Blue Goes to School, featuring the popular Nick JR. character Blue, of Blue's Clues.
Blue Goes to School
Blue Goes to School is a childrens book, of course. This book was written a few years back. In fact this book was written while Steve was still on the show before Joe took over. You will find a couple of pictures of Steve in the book one in the beginning and one in the end.
The Plot
Blue has a big day ahead of her. She is going to school! This is the first line of the book and pretty much explains what the book is about. She has everything she needs to go to school. The book takes you in to Blue's classroom and you get to meet Blue's teacher Mrs. Marigold. Blue must find her cubby and your child gets to help her. Blue also has story time and art time, and your child will get to guess what Blue needs to share.
The book is full of interactive questions for the child to participate in the book while it is being read to them. Kids who are big fans of the book should appreciate all of the characters shown and mentioned in the book.
You follow Blue through her school day, through her activities, and even during lunch. Children are reminded that at the end of the day everything must be cleaned up.
The book is as much a series of events and questions as it is a story. The story is much like what a typical school day is like for your typical Kindergartner, or pre-School aged child. Of course most Kindergartners and pre-school children don't eat lunch at School unless the pre-school is an all day, day care type of preschool.
A parent note says that the book focuses on preschool pro-social situations and provides strategies for how to think about dealing with them. This includes providing situations where a preschool or Kindergarten aged child might have to stop, think, and act when in a tough situation. For example: When two other students are sitting on either side Blues best friend, Blue is unsure on how to react. Since Blue normally sits next to her best friend she becomes a bit uncomfortable because she does not know how to handle this change of events. Blue must now decide how she is going to react this. Of course there are several options for Blue to take. This situation gives the parent a good opportunity to discuss Blues options and to try and figure out together what the best course of action is. Several of these types of scenarios are given in this book.
Art Work
The art work is bright bold and very colorful. The characters look just like the characters on the television show. The two pictures of Steve are actual photographs placed in the art work, just like Steve and Joe are placed in to the cartoon scenery on the show.
My Thoughts
I think that the way the situations are presented in to the story are excellent. The questions allow the child to use their thinking skills to figure things out. It also gives the parent and child an opportunity to talk about what they would do or how they would handle certain situations if they were Blue. Usually on the following page after a situation is presented you will find out what Blue does do in the situation, but there is enough pause that you can have the discussion with your child. This can also help a parent be more aware of how fine tuned their child's social skills are, and a good opportunity for parents to teach their child what proper social behavior is.
The book is easy to read and not heavily worded, it is an excellent book for parents to read to their children, and also a fairly easy book to read for a child who is just beginning to read on their own. I believe the best age group for this book would be from ages 4 to 6. Although a mature 3 year old in pre-school may also like the book, and I also think that most 7 year olds would enjoy it as well. It is certainly a wonderful book to read to a child who is about to enter school for the first time.
Blue goes to school is a wonderful book that provides valuable tools for teaching, learning, and fine tuning social skills. The book is realistic, colorful, and well done. I do recommend Blue Goes to School.
