2001: A Movie Odyssey (The Ten Best Films of the Year)
by Montepenny | Mar 04 '02
These ten films are proof enough that 2001 was actually a good year (overall, anyway) for movies.

I have to tell you how much I loathed AI. I loved it up until it turned into the Pinocchio story and Chris Rock showed up and it turned into sap.

Nice to see From Hell on the list and where is The Royal Tenenbaums?

I'm not even gonna say anything about Vanilla Sky...yuck!

nice work

Am waiting for the DVD release of AI tomorrow (I did not watch this during its original theatrical run). Am waiting for the Lord of the Rings on DVD as well.

I did like Training Day... or, at least, Denzel Washington. I'm still looking for an opportunity to catch A Beautiful Mind while its still running in theaters.

What about that film from the Coen brothers? The Man Who Wasn't There? (I didn't see it yet.)

Enjoyed reading your 10-best choices,

Montepenny,

Very cool list and great choices if I may say so myself. Glad to see that you enjoyed the remake of Ocean's 11, a film which I felt was one of the best sleeper hits of 2001. And of course, kudos for including the usual suspects: Moulin Rouge, Memento, and The Lord of the Rings.

From Hell sounds like a very unique take on the Jack the Ripper case. I'll definitely check it out.

Did you by any chance see Black Hawk Down? (I don't remember you writing a review of this film or mentioning your thoughts on it.) Just saw it yesterday and it is one hell of a visceral experience. It plunges you right into the battlefield where every second is the difference between life and death. Though the film was released in 2002 nationwide, it was officially released (limited) in 2001. See it.

I liked how you included those quotes :)
I don't agree with you on some of your selections, such as Lord of the Rings(I hated it) and Memento(not well done from my perspective),but I liked how you include A Beautiful Mind, that one certainly deserved it.
Cheers,
Cozmo.

PS-that's the first time I've ever seen(that I can remember) where someone has included an animated movie in their top-ten list.
