The Bottom Line I hope you see a few tunes that you like, and aren't too frightened by your brush with my inner psyche.
Okay, sorry about the interruption, me hearties. If I weren't so damn lazy, I would actually divide the review into roughly equal halves. Unfortunately, I am so damn lazy. Here is the tail end of my review. (If you missed the beginning, it's here: http://www.epinions.com/content_2536677508) Breathless - The Corrs I love The Corrs. They are the most beautiful people ever. This song opens with the main line from the chorus, which will repeated a lot. There is a great reverb put on those first vocals that somehow makes it sound like their echoes are being sucked in backwards. Drums come in with a synthesizer keyboard, but the keyboard fades into the background during the verse. In the second half of the verse, a guitar enters the picture, as does a higher-pitched synthesizer sound like a cross between a harpsichord and a triangle. The electric guitar does some distinctive wailing during the bridge. I immediately loved this song as soon as I popped my new Corrs CD into my computer (still my primary CD player), and was pleased to see it used in a variety of places, such as the commercials for Chocolat, which I never did see even though it looked really good. This is a song about a great love. In the lyric, "The daylight's fading slowly / But time with you is standing still / I'm waiting for you only / The slightest touch and I feel weak," the singer demonstrates that this guy is so amazing that his presence completely transcends her senses. She asks him to "Go on, go on / Come on / Leave me breathless / Tempt me, tease me / Till I can't deny this loving feeling." That the guy has this power over her is really impressive. The reasoning behind my inclusion of this song is kind of sad and pathetic, so please just spare me the embarrassment and don't read the rest of this paragraph (P.S. If you actually don't read it, I will be terribly hurt that you don't care enough about me to be nosy.). I desperately want to feel this way about someone, and I want it to last the entire rest of my life. Thus far, I have only ever managed to maintain anything even remotely resembling this for perhaps a week at most. Okay, so now you know my heart's innermost desire. If I looked into the Mirror of Erised, I would see myself deliriously in love with Matt Damon and (more importantly) he with me. It's Raining Men - The Weather Girls We start with a synthsizer-piano buildup that is augmented by the sounds of a thunderstorm. The singers treat us to a spoken intro where they introduce themselves as "your weather girls." When the verse starts, a drum comes in, and the sound of the piano changes from anticipatory to a sort of percolating rain sound. The two singers alternate between one singing and one sometimes offering spoken echoes or comments on the just-sung line. The cool thunder sound comes back during the chorus, and there is a punctuating sound that appears during the first chorus and pretty much stays around thereafter, that sounds like clapping hands. There is also a very loud booming drum that makes only one or two brief appearances. This song is based on the wonderful concept of an idealized utopia. The Weather Girls (This pair of large women originally called themselves Two Tons of Fun, and changed their name due to the success of this song.) describe: "Humidity's rising / Barometer's getting low / According to all sources / The street's the place to go / 'Cos tonight for the first time / At just about half past ten / For the first time in history / It's gonna start raining men." The delightful thing about this song is that it meant to be taken literally. The lyrics go on to praise, " God bless Mother Nature / She's a single woman too ," and one of the Weather Girls declares her plans to "go out / [and] let [her]self get / Absolutely soaking wet." They also urge women to "Rip off the roof and stay in bed." I would absolutely adore a world in which men fell out of the sky and into my lap. In fact, I went to a party once where most attendees were good-looking gay men, and I felt that I was truly in my intended place in the world. Plus, this is a great song to dance to, so I had to include it. Eskimo - Corky and the Juice Pigs This one might as well have been written just for me. It's purely a humor song, and the only instrument is the guitar. The song opens with the line "I'm the only gay Eskimo / I'm the only one I know / I'm the only gay Eskimo in my tribe." The rest of the first half of the song simply consists of a few rhyming couplets. My favorite two are "I go out seal hunting with my best friend Tarka / But all I wanna do is get into his parka," and "I make a wish on the Northern Lights / That I could find a decent pair of whale skin tights." Then the singers proceed to declare that they will now sing like various other would sing this song. Among the greats mentioned are The Proclaimers, Bob Dylan, The Cars ("I'm the only gay Eskimo / And she used to be mine."), Oasis, and Van Morrison. Naturally, I can relate to this song, because I am a homosexual in a technical field (i.e., not theater or art), and I often feel like the only gay Eskimo. So, there you have it, the soundtrack to my life. I hope you saw a few tunes that you liked, and weren't too frightened by your brush with my inner psyche.
