The Bottom Line Brilliant music which sounds so much better live. Shirley Manson goes wild and really pleases the crowd. I've seen them twice and I'll go again!
I have seen Garbage twice and both times they were absolutely brilliant - anything but garbage... (sorry). The first time was in October 1999 in Auckland, New Zealand's Super Top. I wasn't a big fan - I liked a few songs I'd heard on the radio but didn't own anything. They were supporting Alanis Morissette (my real reason for seeing them - I had just been converted into an Alanis fan on the strength of Supposed Former Infatuation Juukie) but they fully blew her out of the water. Shirley Manson (lead singer) is the complete opposite to Alanis. Down to earth, genuine, not dancing round the stage in a drug-induced stupor... The lightshow on its own was amazing. Garbage rocked through a huge number of hits from their albums Garbage and Version 2.0. Push It was a definite highlight with an animated Shirley leading the crowd in "Pa-pa-pa-PUSH IT!" Also in the "papapa" part of When I Grow Up, one of their boppier songs. Another crowd favourite was No# 1 Crush from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack (pity about the movie). The crowd couldn't get enough and the mosh-pit was wild. I also remember Only Happen When It Rains, Stupid Girl, Milk and I Think I'm Paranoid being fantastic. We even got a story on how last time she came to NZ she lost her precious ring and it was returned by some generous kiwi-woman. All-in-all a very memorable, action-packed, rocky experience. The second time was at the 2002 Big Day Out, also in Auckland. I'd won 21 tickets (yes, that was me on the radio and the only reason I didn't sound too excited was because I was in the middle of a bastard shift at work) and had dished 'em out to my mates. Everyone was excited about seeing Shihad, Basement Jaxx, Stellar*, Tadpole, Blindspott, White Stripes, Regurgitator, Alien Ant Farm, Amen, Prodigy, NOFX and a crapload of other bands but Garbage were always going to be my favourite. Unfortunately the terrible System Of A Down had mucked up the line-up (someone in the moshpit broke a leg) and Garbage had to play late (causing me to me Crystal Method!) and after a bit of a rainstorm but I was right up the front so I didn't care. This time there was a whole new (and wicked!) album beautifulgarbage to draw from so this show was bound to be better. Shirley didn't tell us any stories this time but she did make us sing along. Garbage's greatest hits from the inevitable Only Happy When It Rains to When I Grow Up were displayed in all their glory. Unfortunately they didn't play The World Is Not Enough, one of my favourites (from the Bond movie of the same name). But the new material was more then enough to make up for it. Androgyny was great - Shirley managed to hit all the notes, as was my favouritest song of the moment, Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!). Shut Your Mouth was very edgy, very rocky, very nasty like it's intended to sound - brilliant. Ms Manson announced they were to play a track from their new album live for the very first time - it was Parade - another favourite of mine - and boy, was it good. One of their best live songs. Wicked vocals, great rock.... The lighting wasn't so good as last time (thanks to the outdoor setting), and the mosh-pit was less wild (thanks to the System and the tighter crowd-surfing rules) but the new music was fantastic. A few slower ones to show off the now-blonde Manson's beautiful but aggressive voice but a mostly wild, mosh-worthy set. To sum up: Garbage are brilliant on CD, but even better live. The songs are more raw (they have been criticised for being too polished) and lively and emotional. Shirley has a very powerful voice, never missing a note, and the band are wicked with every member getting a solo or too to show off their skills. The crowd goes wild thanks to the loud sounds, catchy/rocky songs, the lighting, and Shirley's crowd-pleasing antics. SEE THEM! I know I'd jump at the chance to see them for the third time. |
