hello my name is crystal i have epilepsy i can live for the most part on my own but i can't get a job because this disability stops me to compensate the state gives me social security income.in time i hope to go to college. i am 18 years old and cannot drive for fear of having a seizure and killing someone. i would prefer not to ride the city bus to college but that is the fate that looms over me if i go to college and move out on my own my grandmother takes care of me she has since i was nine years old but she and my grand father are nearing old age and cannot take me every where i need or want to go. i would like to know what options are there for me in the transportation department. please respond

Transportation Education (Reply to this comment)

The best way to educate a person with special needs to use public transportation is have someone like a teacher go with them on the bus until they have the hang of it. Also use the internet to help those with a minor disabillity to get fare and schedule info. As for cabs such as paratransit teach them to use the phone to schedule routs. Also don't rely on ontime busses and cabs. Always have a cell phone in hand.

on a subject that is important to so many families. It is really sad that Americans with Disabilities Act had to be even made a law. So many Americans are inflicted with disabilities and our society chose to shun them rather than except them for who they are, instead of what they can't do. I have seen all kinds of acts of kindness toward disabled citizens as well as unkind acts that me sick. Every American should have the right to pursue happiness in their life without barriers in their way. I think you are doing a great thing with this, even though I am not disabled nor any member of my family. But even if one person benefits from your advice it should make you feel proud.

...and I'm happy to hear that things are getting better, but I also know of the challenges that the disabled face.

I took care of my sister, who has MS, for five years. She drives a Rascal type of scooter, and facing the curbs...bumps, barriers, and sometimes just plain rude people was something that she dealt with everyday.

Her hubby worked a good job, and was able to afford a van that had to be adapted for her scooter and her...but what of those who cannot afford such a 'luxury' as being able to go to the store?

Thanks for writing about a subject that is dear to my heart....kath
