I am Disappointed - Top Reviewer and Editor Selections are BOGUS

Feb 22 '02

The Bottom Line Top Reviewer and Editor Selections at Epinions are BOGUS.

I must express the disbelief and disappointment that I experienced in discovering some of the members who were selected as Top Reviewers and Editors here at Epinions.

The process is totally unfair and obviously flawed.

Many members have written to complain about this issue in the past. The problem has not been repaired. It actually seems to have gotten worse. Now, this snafu in the selection process is actually causing hard feelings and division within the community. Some members have already quit the site. And I don't blame them.

Please understand: I do not intend, by this protest, to criticize any member who was selected as a new Top Reviewer or Editor. Especially since these persons played absolutely no role in the selection process.

I ask the community at large... How fair is this?

Top Reviewer Selections
----------------------------------------
A new member -- trusted by fewer than 10 people and having less than a dozen reviews -- is named TOP REVIEWER in Music.

A member -- trusted by a grand total of three people and having less than 20 reviews in total and under 300 member hits -- is named TOP REVIEWER in Restaurants. (Less than one dozen of the reviews involve restaurants.)

A new member -- 33 reviews since Dec 28 '01 -- is named TOP REVIEWER in Movies (22 reviews in this category).

Sorry: a member who has written only three reviews in the past 19 months is named TOP REVIEWER in Outdoor Gear. That just blows my mind.

Editor Selections
----------------------------------------
A number of Editors have not written or rated reviews in months and they still remain on as Editors. A highly respected member and person I trust completely remains as Editor although he has been unable to login to Epinions and rate a single review for several months. The problem is especially bad in some categories -- ahem -- where some of the least active writers and raters are selected to serve as editors. I mean... really... how fair is that?

The process for selecting Top Reviewers and Editors is flawed and reform is needed now. Whatever Epinions is doing, it is not working and has clearly disaffected some members of the community to the point that they have left the site. And that, really, is the great tragedy.

Why not develop -- and publish -- more specific selection guidelines?

For example: Top Reviewers must be active (ten reviews in the past 60 days), have a sizable body of work in the subject category (more than 100 reviews), and be in good standing. Editors must be active (rate 250 or more reviews in their category in the past 30 days), have a demonstrated knowledge in the category that they rate in (more than 50 reviews posted, rated "VH" as a minimum), and be in good standing. That's just a start, but at least it is more specific than current selection criteria seems to be.

Unbelievable. I really am sad to see how some very deserving and hard working members at this site have been ignored and left unrewarded.
