Home Comforts is an incredible book. Cheryl Mendelson will teach you the correct way to clean, organize and care for anything in your home AND give you the reasoning behind doing it her way.
The sheer volume of information contained in this book is awesome. It contains 884 pages of information ranging from safety in the kitchen to proper laundry care to caring for wood, metals, and other surfaces.
Did you know there is a method to folding a sheet so you can lay it on the bed, unfold it and have it perfectly centered? There's actually a whole chapter entitled "Folding Clothes and Linens". Finally someone gives you a method for folding a fitted sheet that doesn't result in a misshapen blob.
Cheryl also gives you good information on what kinds of materials to purchase, what type of lighting is best for reading, how to choose rugs and carpets, and so on.
For the kitchen, there are wonderful charts describing how long different types of food last in the refrigerator or freezer. The author also provides several pages of information on food safety and methods of santization in the kitchen.
But beware...
To say the author is a bit fanatical in her approach to cleaning would be a gross understatement. She is a lawyer, but how she has time to practice law is beyond me. This woman irons her sheets with lavender water. She is the type to dust the ceiling monthly and wipe the doors down weekly.
Now her perfectionism is definitely inspiring - I'd like to take my shoes off and tiptoe through her home sometime - but you'll probably want to ease up on her methods a bit if you have any kind of a life. But this book is the ideal. You'll glean lots of good information if you don't let yourself get discouraged by the whole thing.
Home Comforts is the kind of book that is great to curl up and read even if you don't end up ironing your sheets with lavender water.
