Re: my child has reflux (Reply to this comment)

There is a g-tube list serve. I found it when I was searching for information since my son almost had to have one. I added two cans of ensure plus to his soy milk and he gained weight and no longer malnourished.

I have deleted all those emails but know there was a website and then you sign up for the emails. There is also a feeding group on yahoo groups that I joined that helped as well.

Good luck

I work in a pediatric rehab facility and have one tip. I have treated several young people that have had a G-tube. I am working on feeding skills. Many of these children stop having the sensory experiences that eating gives us, therefore, needing therapy to develop this area. I wish more of the tips given parents were to continue to offer oral sensory activities, teethers for very young, different textured toothbrushes, etc. Sounds like your child is very lucky to have you!

I also wondered if you could expand on this a bit. Do you need a Rx for this, is the procedure costly, covered under insurance, do you need a supply of tubes, where do you get them?

How did you learn of the latex allergy? I cannot wear gloves and have eczema. Are there different sizes to tubes, how long does it take to do say eight ounces of liquid?

I could probably come up with more questions but that is what comes to my mind.

Also do you get a home health care to assist when you start, do they teach you in the hospital?

I was opposed to this for my son, and honestly not knowedgeable in the area but it just freaked me out to do this.

Also due to his disability I had fears that he would pull it out or what have you.

Thanks again for writing this essay.
