Toy How To's- Finger Paint

Feb 24 '02

The Bottom Line Toy How To's are the home made version of the store bought kind. The sometimes more economical way to go.

Do you know that the day that your in the mood to go outside and let the kids finger paint, your out of a color or they are dried up, or worse you don't have any at all; because you forgot to get some more. Like finger paint is on the top ten list when you go running errands. Yeah right. So in my house, since there are three kids, and usually some added neighborhood kids hanging out. I go and make some. But make sure you have these ready in your home or you will have to go to the store anyway.

Finger Paint Recipe
One batch will make 4 different colors or 2 larger batches or if your really want to take all day, make a huge batch for each color that you want to make. I usually do the last choice. You might want to have one bowl, one medium saucepan, and one plastic spoon designated for this project only.

SHOPPING LIST
(for one batch each)
1 envelope of un-flavored gelatin
cold water
1 c. cornstarch
1/2 c. soap flakes (like laundry soap)
2 drops of food coloring (of each color you want)

Recipe
1 Envelope un-flavored gelatin
2-1/2 cups COLD water
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup soap flakes
2 drops of food color (for each of the four colors that you will be making)

Directions
In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over 1/2 cup water and mix until dissolved. Combine the cornstarch, soap flakes, and remaining 2 cups of water; in the saucepan over medium heat. Stirring until thick. Remove from pan from the heat and strain the mixture equally into 4 containers. Cool for 1 hour. Add and fold throughly the colors in each of the 4 containers.

STORE IN THE REFRIGERATOR WHEN NOT IN USE

I love making this. It is fast and simple. I am never out of a color. When I pour the last of a color into the smaller kid tubs, I go inside and make a huge batch. I keep the paint (don't forget that I use one full recipe just for each color) in 1 gallon plastic milk jugs. I never mix batches. Meaning that I don't make a color batch until the prior one is fully gone.
