In Wonderland at Alice's Tea Cup
by Epicure | Feb 24 '02
An absolute gem of a tea cafe, serving over 100 different varieties of teas with delectable food to match. Enchanting in an offbeat, irreverent sort of way.

Not Worthy of its Name (Reply to this comment)

This Tea Cup does not Runneth over.

Atmosphere is dull. The hostess would be better suited behind a bar. Food is greasy. Coffee was shockingly bad. Tea Cups are pretty.Tea was fine. Waiter was lovely.

In my opinion, your money would be better spent on a taxi down to Tea and Sympathy.

I had high hopes based on it's name and the reviews...suffice it to say, we won't be back, ever.

when are we going?

And when are we going to have high tea at the Waldorf?

The Chateau Whistler has a very nice afternoon tea in its bar - lots of delicious foods, though the tea selection leaves a bit to be desired (only about 10 different kinds).

Lovely review. I am drooling now, too.

Oh yes, I know what you mean. I'm rather glad that there hasn't been a Starbucks of tea, so the ritual of afternoon tea can maintain its dignity. Always a pleasure to hear from you, Nick.

Nice to read about a romantic and interesting tea room..... (Reply to this comment)

...in this increasingly over-java'd coffee bar world of ours.

Sounds absolutely divine.

Well done, Michelle. Good pick.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your recommendation. I've heard about the Inn at Irving Place (Lady Mendl's, right?), but haven't been there for tea yet. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Chantilly is basically fresh whipped cream - very soft and airy, not as rich as Devonshire cream, which is probably more popular in England. Honestly, I prefer Devonshire cream on my scones. Nothing quite compares.

Thanks, my friend. These days I often get the urge to write, but not the time. Sometimes I find myself composing pieces in my head almost subconsciously. Glad you enjoyed this one. Maybe we can stop by Alice's when you visit in April.

When I was young, I used tea as an excuse to get the accompanying sandwiches, cakes and cookies. Now I think I've developed an equal appreciation for both - well, almost except when it mocha chocolate chip cake. ;) Thanks for your comment.

what a beautiful, fluid review. a tea suggestion from me: the inn at irving place (in manhattan) you will leave there feeling like you are floating! i don't know if it's the harpist, the rich teas or the decadent, rich atmosphere. a bit pricey but a beautiful way to spend the early part of a sunday afternoon and enjoy a true high tea experience.

What is Chantilly cream. Being English we have single cream, double cream, whipping cream, and clotted cream. Never heard of this one.

This sounds just wonderful, like every restaurant you review. :) I'm not a huge tea drinker, but I definitely prefer it to coffee, and the idea of an English tea with scones, sandwiches and cookies is extremely appealing!

No, your response is always appropriate - when it comes to great food, sometimes words just fail me. If you are a tea lover, you will be in heaven here. The tea menu is so thoughtfully put together, and I love how they incorporate tea in many of their dishes.

Thanks for stopping by,

Epicure :)

(Not the classy response this review deserves, I know!) I've been to tea shops in the States and in England; this sounds more generous and more wicked than anything I've encountered so far. Would love to try it ....
