| knitterb's Full Review: Motorola Timeport P935 |
Before I begin, I must state that I am a big fat geek. I love toys, and gadgets. Although there are many gadgets out there, I find that I actually most of them, or give them away faster than the 10th toaster wedding gift.
I have had a two way pager for over 2 years now. I don't know how I lived without one, and the constant communication is nice. It is a tether, but on I really want. Being a hard core geek, my co-workers/friends and I can keep up with the latest and greatest nerd news.
I upgrades from the Pagewriter 2000x to this Timeport pager (I also have the Timeport Phone at: http://www.epinions.com/content_25456578180). When I did so I also upgraded to the newer Wisdom OS from it's predecessor FlexOS. Not only did that upgrade speed things up, but it also added a host of user interface enhancements.
These things are not that durable, but do take a bit of a beating. I have dropped mine many times. I wouldn't say they are as durable as some pagers (which you can throw around a room), but they can be dropped occasionally. Due to the high cost of this pager, I'd recommend a full replacement policy from your provider. I've had to use that a couple times.
Don't be distracted by the size. Although my pager is larger than my cell phone, if you're gonna have a cell phone on your hip, this thing fits in place. It does kinda make you look like a techno-geek carpenter with a big utility belt, but I've seen much worse.
The speed of the pager could be improved some. Although it's not by any means slow, if you start typing before a screen shows, it sometimes misses the first few characters. Not really that bad for the novice or newbie, but after you get used to it, you'll find yourself consciously typing slower. Honestly, I don't think it get's much faster on any other pager.
I did try out the RIM pagers, and they were nice and fast, but the lack of features and clumbsy interface really sucked. I don't know if they've mad things better in the past year or not. One thing that was missing on the RIM's is filtering. This is where you can take message with certain characters and push them into another mailbox. You can then have mailboxes with different tones, or quiet. EXTREMELY nice when you have hourly system updates you don't always want to be buzzed on, or you have a "911" box where it alerts you even when your pager is on silent.
The development environment for this pager is quiet sweet. No need for any major skills in other languages, Motorola invented their own. The FlexOS (and now Wisdom OS) development environment allows you to program your own applications. I had a simple one written in about 2 days.
Finally there are so many tones out there for the pager it's amazing. They play different songs and such, all up to about 30 minutes. Check out this site: http://bleu.west.spy.net/~dustin/music/. You can't have more music than that.
The battery was kinda weird. It does last a long time, unless I'm on buzz. Now the weird part...it NEVER takes more than about 30 minutes to charge. I can have it fully unloaded and it will just recharge in about 30 minutes. That's nice!
All in all it's a nice pager, and I like it. The keyboard is easy to type on, the display bright and adjustable, and the look can't be beat! ;-)
