The Bottom Line Got a great Provider? Let her know by treating her well!

There are currently three things possessing me to write this review tonight. Rather, three experiences I have recently had that have me on my knees begging...
...Begging for all parents everywhere to find a good provider and then treat her (or him) like gold. I have written a review about what to look for in a provider which can be found here:

If It Glitters, It’s Gold:
If you have your child in someone else’s care, you really trust this person. For the purpose of this review, we will all assume this is correct being as how I know you would not leave your most valuable possession under any other circumstances. So, let’s say that your provider is all that you want in such and I am asking, no, telling you to treat them well. You are of lucky breed to have found such a wonderful person.

Chalathra, Out On A Limb:
Here I go. I shall make a rather bold statement. PROVIDING CHILDCARE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB IN THE WORLD! Think about it... Fire fighters, Police Officers, Doctors, Lawyers... all very important. However I venture to say that if there were a day where ALL providers decided not to provide care, the world would be brought to it’s knees. Let’s face it, you need us. The doctors and lawyers would have nowhere to take their precious Joe’s and Jane’s. We care for the future. So again, treat your provider extremely well.

February 25, 2002:
The first of the three things that have me writing about this in particular. I want to thank all of those who sent their well wishes and positive vibes. Yesterday, my mother (kamel622) and I became Licensed Family Day Care Providers. We have been once before, in California. After moving to Wisconsin, we both went and got jobs as preschool teachers in a center. However, life’s path has brought us back to doing what we love- daycare in the home. Being licensed means there are certain standards that my mom and I must meet, as well as my home. We have accomplished all this and it feels good. With only 29 other licensed providers in our county, it is an honor to have met these special regulations that say the state of Wisconsin agrees we should be caring for the future. So, again, thank you all for your support! I just love this wonderful Epinions community. (((Warm Fuzzies)))

Incident Number 2:
We have been caring for two children for just over a month now. We knew this parent from the center in which we worked. Now, surprise me it did when this parent called as she was the lone parent that did not admired and praise us on a consistent basis. I thought she was the only parent that would actually be happy that we were gone. But, alas, I must have been wrong as she was the first parent to act on our new business. She has brought her one year old to us full time and her preschooler on a part time basis. I should have known what to expect... She has had unreasonable demands on us since she has started here. She has not only not treated us like the gold we are, but she has spoken in a rude way to me in my own home. So, I ask of you. Do not speak rudely to your provider. There will undoubtedly be misunderstandings and disagreements as providers are human too. (And actually, the rudeness comes at us because of licensing and food program guidelines that we must follow) This parent must appreciate us, otherwise she could not work and would not allow her children to continuously come to us for care.

My Rant Continues:
Another parent from the center we worked at called a few weeks ago, wanting to reserve slots for her two children as the new provider she currently goes to was going on vacation. “Great!” I’d love to see these children and Mom and I could really use the money. This is after all our JOB. It was marked on my calendar, only to be crossed off when I got a phone call 12 hours before the children were scheduled to arrive. One of their children wanted to go to the center because she wanted to see her old friends. She was very sad about not seeing me & Miss Kathy, but really wanted to see her friends. This is something I find totally reasonable and acceptable. Had the parent let us know sooner. Both Mom and I had come to rely on the money we expected to receive for caring for these children and had planned accordingly as far as projects and menus were concerned. Lesson to be taken from this...Please remember that your provider loves children, but does rely on being paid- and on time just as you rely on getting paid from your job. One thing that happens a lot in child care is not getting paid on time. Can you imagine your boss telling you “Ohhhh, I can’t pay you today. I’ll bring your check next week.” It happens to providers a lot. Now, I ask you, is this how you treat gold?

Karma:
As I’ve stated in previous reviews, I believe in karma. Both my mom and I are AWESOME providers, make no mistake about it. We have been told by several people. Parents have loved us and not held back in telling us so. We will fill our daycare to capacity, I know. I will come to demand parents treating us well. I am just asking that you do something special, something out of the ordinary and unexpected for your provider once in a while. A little gift, if you will. Even just a “Thank you!” This job is a tough one and very under appreciated. But, remember, we raise the future, treat us as such.
