Re: Are the cost of the blinds worth the energy savings? (Reply to this comment)

I see your point. In the summer months my electric bill ranges anywhere from $200 tp $350 depending on how hot it has been. My friend's house which is similar in size and also has twelve windows but a couple of them are slightly smaller than mine. Her habits are much the same as mine when it comes to the use of electricity also. Her bills range from $300 to $500. Her A/C unit runs continuously, whereas mine at least shuts off periodically (Hers is one year older than mine). I do attribute that directly to my double glazing and these Bali Blinds. So, I figure $100 savings per month will pretty much pay for them in just over a year, yeah.

Thanks for stopping by.

Are the cost of the blinds worth the energy savings? (Reply to this comment)

This was an excellent review.

While reading, it made me wonder how long it would actually take before you would break even on the cost of the blinds and then actually start saving money on electric bills.

I mention that because a few years ago, in Florida where it's brutally hot like in Texas, I had someone from the power company come in to do an energy audit. She mentioned that the windows in the house were not very energy efficient, but she said it would take years to actually save enough on the electric bills to make it worth the cost of new more energy efficient windows.

$1200 to $1300 is a lot if you bought them mostly to save on energy costs. If, as an example, you saved $15 a month on your electric bill as a direct result of the blinds (and a 25% less bill on a different house could also be related to better insulation, better windows, different positioning of the sun hitting the house at various times of the day, etc.) it would still take around 6-7 years before you broke even on the cost of the blinds. It was just a thought....

But then you were buying these for aesthetic reasons as well as to save some money on your electric bill, right?

You have a new house? I am sure out of the loop. i feel sorry for "ya all" down there in Texas, as the heat is overwhelming. I hope these shades do the job for you. Listen, in Chicago, my husband and I are o hot blooded, we have the air on now and it is 55 degrees outside and we have the air on now.

Hope all is good!
