Peace Among the Flowers--San Salvador's Botanical GardenMar 04 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line San Salvador's Botanical Gardens are a bit tough to find but worth the search--beautiful and restful! There are a few not-to-be-missed sights in San Salvador: The National Cathedral with its brightly colored dome and Fernando Llardo mural on the front; the Anthropological Museum with its fascinating displays (especially the ancient carved stones in the garden area); the various market places; and the charming Museum of Miniatures. Perhaps the most enjoyable is the Botanical Garden. The Gardens are not easy to find. We had to get directions from various sources and piece together the location from differing advice and our Let's Go Central America guidebook. It is reachable by bus. By car it is located in an area with lots of small industry (so loaded with trucks), not far from the University (UCA). There's a nursery abutting it which, at first, we thought was the gardens. The folks there directed us around the corner. The gardens were virtually empty so we were able to wander the many pathways without running into lots of people. There's a small map of the place available when you purchase your entry ticket. The grounds are lovely! There are many kinds of plants grouped by region or type. There's a huge bamboo forest; a desert area with very interesting cactus; a place with orchids that are just beautiful; and a central area with a large pond displaying aquatic plants. If you are lucky, as we were, you can glimpse some interesting birds and the beaver like animals (don't recall the name) that live there. These are larger than beavers, brown fur, no tail to speak of, and a funny squirrel like face. My husband isn't crazy about rodents and so wasn't too enamored of them. I thought they were adorable! In the center, at the pond, there is a modest lunch place that seems to have delicious homemade Salvadoran food (and cool drinks and snacks). We had to leave by lunch time but enjoyed a coke, sitting and watching the birds (and enjoying the delicious smells of lunch being set out)! We spent about 2 hours there which wasn't hard at all, especially if you read the descriptive signs on the plants and take some time to relax on the many benches in the gardens. It's really a treat and shouldn't be missed! |
