| SHAPIRO2's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1700-XL275 |
I have owned many laptops & have been looking for the PERFECT laptop for 4 months & this is it. I special ordered my Presario 1700T with a Pentium III 850Mhz, 512MB of RAM, a 20GB hard drive, 13.3" TFT screen (less battery consumption & lighter than a 14.1"), a combo DVD/CD-RW drive (AWESOME), a car adapter, extra battery, and overnight shipping. The total cost was only $2,100, which is incredible for a fully featured laptop with these specifications.
The 850Mhz P3 processor is absolutely phenomenal. It boots up in like 20 seconds. I can't believe it. For even more speed, Compaq threw in UltraDMA (UltraATA) 66 hard drives. This means that every read/write bites off 66 megabytes of information every read/write. This is twice as fast as other laptops running UltraDMA 33 drives. This is comparable to a desktop in hard drive performance. Also wit 512 megs of RAM, I can burn a CD in less than 5 minutes while surfing the web, checking email, and writing a Word document at the same time with no errors on the CD being burnt. The 13.3" TFT screen is incredibly bright & clear. It makes watching DVD's a real pleasure. It even has an S-Video out so you can watch a DVD on your TV & it looks great. Believe or not, the little "scroll button" by the touchpad is very useful. I figured it was a gimick when I read the specs on the laptop, but it really helps.
Be aware that Compaq has moved into the future by ridding their laptops of serial ports (the 9 pin connector for a mouse or cell phone cable). This may be a factor if you don't have a USB mouse (read my article on the Microsoft Intellipoint mouse). But they did add 2 USB ports to the design, which is nice for hooking up a digital camera & mouse at the same time.
Overall, I'm planning on keeping this laptop for awhile... Considering I buy a new one every few months! Also, if I think that it is ever getting "too slow" for me, the processor is upgradeable since it is a "mobile flip chip." Currently I could put up to a 1.1Ghz processor, which is unbelievable. Go out & buy one of these & get financing thru MBNA offered on the Compaq website if you have too:)
