I've had my ScanExpress A3 USB for maybe two years. I'd had an earlier model that died after probably three years; so, this was a replacement. I already knew the older model and wasn't expecting greatness. One of my earlier disappointments was that the scanner focused only at the upper surface of the glass so that any air space between the glass and the item scanned caused blurring. But I already knew that when I bought this one.
All scanners have software that allows control of brightness, contrast, histogram control, color control, etc. Once you have found the optimum settings for these very little if any photo-editing is required.
I reproduce artwork and am especially picky about image quality. Now I usually use a digital camera to photograph the original paintings; however, if the painting is small and not textured I use the A3.
Both surfaces of the glass are coated with something (maybe silicone) that tends to look scuffed, but I discovered that it had no effect on scanned results.
I do recommend the scanner. I should also say that when mine arrived the glass was loose. It was a simple matter of taking it apart and regluing the glass to the frame. What do you really expect for $160 rather than $1,600?
