This makes a lot of sense to me...
I'll bet people figure that if the barrel was used once by a distillery, it's still good to go. That theory seems to get some extra credence by the fact that distilleries themselves do not always use new barrels, instead getting them from wineries or other sources. No?
You're right though -- laying down a tequila at home sure seems like a sure way to damage a perfectly good drink. No matter how much I like tinkering, I think I'll leave the aging to the professionals and I'll stick to drinking!

Some very good information and adice. In Tequila town, I saw quite a few shops selling small barrels to tourists for home storage. Seemed kind of kitschy; didn't realize that part of the attraction was to home-age a Reposado.
