Dawn Uplifting Lies

Written: Sep 21 '06 (Updated Sep 21 '06)
Pros:A good quality product in terms of how well it works.
Cons:Not uplifting, a mediocre and barely noticeable fragrance.
The Bottom Line: Works well. I don't expect it to actually uplift someone doing dishes, but is it too much to ask to get a good fragrance out of it?

I believe that the only thing that would uplift me while I'm washing the dishes is either for my husband to take over, or tell me that we just won the lottery and I would never have to wash dishes again. Dawn Botanicals Lemongrass & Orange Blossom Uplifiting Dishwashing Liquid did little to convince me otherwise.

Dawn Botanicals Uplifting Lemongrass & Orange Blossom comes in a 25 oz bottle (at least it's the only size I've seen it in). It's a clear bottle with a yellow/orange label that says "UPLIFTING". It has a flip-top cap. It's the bottle you see above. The other Botanicals fragrances are different colors.

About the product:
The clear but yellow dishwashing liquid is thick enough not to be watery, yet not overly thick. It dispenses easily from the bottle and is "ultra concentrated". Not that it means anything, most liquids on the market are as "concentrated" as this one.

I think Dawn has the same formula regardless of the scent, except for the special Oxi or Direct Foam cleaners. I think this is the case, but I can't be sure because there is no ingredient list on the bottle. All it says for ingredients is "Dawn contains biodegradable surfactants (anionic and nonionic). Contains no phosphates." Apparently it's important that it doesn't contain phosphates since they put it in bold :)
Other than that, there's basic information on the bottle about the product, its cleaning ability, its fragrance, etc.

Dawn, regardless of the fragrance, creates lots of suds. In fact, it creates almost too much suds. When I fill up the sink, I actually scrape some of the suds off the top into the other sink. I'd definitely prefer too many suds over too little though.

Dawn is famous for removing grease. And I have to say it does do a really good job of that. I generally don't have greasy pots and pans because I am an extremely health-conscious cook. However, I do, occasionally, fix my husband some fried fish because he loves it so much. This product works well on grease, even pans that have been filled with nothing but grease/oil. It not only removes it from the pan, but stops the grease or oil from sticking to other dishes in the sink or your hands.

On other substances, such as food, it does a good job as well, although many other cheaper brands do as well of a job. Dawn, however, is the best I have found in removing oil and grease.

Although it works extremely well on grease, it is still gentle on hands. It does dry the skin out a bit, but it's a "grease-lifter", it's designed to remove oil, so it's going to do that to your hands as well. Nothing lasting, a simple squirt of hand lotion afterwards and everything is fine. Dawn does not irritate the hands anymore than having them immersed in water for 20 minutes does. Dawn also does not leave a residue on them.

The 'UPLIFTING' fragrance:
It let me down. At first sniff, you can smell a faint lemony/orange scent, but it is soon overpowered by Dawn's regular smell. I'm sure most of you are familiar with it. Dishwashing liquids, all that I have found anyway, have pretty much the same basic smell. Some products do a better job of adding fragrance that you can actually smell over the 'regular' smell. This product simply does not. The lemony/orange smell is pleasant, but not great, and is certainly not uplifting, especially when you can only smell it for .06 seconds before the 'regular' smell is all that remains. Pour this into a sink of water and the lemony/orange fragrance is non-existant. In fact, you might as well just use regular Dawn.

I have to admit that I didn't actually believe that ANY cleaning product would actually uplift me or anyone else, but I at least expected a great fragrance. But this product did not meet that expectation. Because of this, I rate it only average. I would rate the regular brand at least 4, possibly 5 stars, because it makes no false claims. Dawn Botanicals Uplifting Lemongrass & Orange Blossom, however, does.
