| fireted's Full Review: Yakima Hully Rollers |
Here is some background before I start the full review !
I am 31 -5'10", 225 lbs and a Firefighter, my wife is30 - 5'5" and 104lb School Teacher.
We drive a 2007 Ford Explorer NBX, paddling 2-16' Wilderness System Kayaks.
No picture last year, after a 2 day paddle trip we beach our boats at the pull out point, we carry/drag them to our vehicle (2005 explorer), unload all the gear and then attempt to hoist them some 6' up to the old kayak rack. No I was tired and sore, but I could still lift them that height but my wife couldn't them you have to slide/push/grunt them into position. Screaming/yelling ensued and the drive home was very very silent !
Fast forward to this year. New vehicle, new racking system same boats and bodies 1 year older. Same height to lift, but now they glide up the rest of the way like puffy little clouds carelessly and effortlessly.
Yakima hulley rollers are truly marriage and back savers.
Instead of the traditional flat saddle type holders, they are comprised of 4 rollers ( 1 set ) that pivot and conform to the shape of your boat hull. The instructions could not be any clearer or better laid out. If you have a problem, just call the 800# on the instructions and they will walk you through any difficulties. The rollers allow you to simple place your bow or stern onto them and then simply slide your boat the rest of the way up.
Once you boat is in the right position, lock the wheels to stop and movement and tie your boat(s) down.
The rollers are fully articulated and swivel as well to accommodate any shape and size of kayak and canoe.
We choose to use a traditional flat type saddle for the front landing area, as our vehicle height is such that a front roller wouldn't make any sense.
The rollers are coated in a soft non-marring rubber like product that grips your boat hull like a barnacle while in transport. The locks couldn't be any easier to use, simple pull out to unlock and push in to release, this also allows you to do a visual check to see that the rollers are locked before you leave.
Each Hully Roller box contains : 1 Pair of Hully Roller (Left and right sides(
1 Huge and well padded friction cinch strap, and all the hardware needed to mount to your yakima cross bars ( round or square).
If you decide to to use hully rollers for your entire boat you will need 2 pairs per boat or 2 boxes per boat.
After a full kayaking seasons worth of use, they are working just a good a the first day we put them on. A simple and quick rise with water every time you take you boats down and they are as good as new.
Save you back, your boat and your marriage with these little wonders.
p.s. we also found that the hull scratching has been cut down since starting to use these rollers
