There has been much discussion on a number of boards concerning eroyalties and income share at Epinions. I write here to briefly provide some feedback to the community regarding my recent experience. I am a fairly regular contributor at the site. On average, I post about one review per day. Most of my reviews have been in the "Gourmet" category, which -- for me -- is pretty much defined as the "cigars and liquor" section. The awkward aspect of this category is that the online sale of merchandise for items listed and advertised in this category is restricted. For example: cigar sales are limited to adults who are at least 21 years of age. The same is true with alcohol, and then there are some additional laws that prohibit the interstate mailing of alcohol (in certain circumstances). And there are other difficulties, like convenience and perishability: one doesn't, for example, buy a dinner entrée online from the Olive Garden Restaurant. So then, as you can imagine, the income share I derive from my "Gourmet" category reviews is pretty small. In some cases, nothing is earned. That's okay by me, since I am more interested in sharing my opinions about certain products than I am in making money. However, last month, I did post one review on a consumer electronic. That single review earned over $7 in income share and was viewed by over 300 nonmember visitors to the site. So... the trick I reveal is not really a trick, but an observation: the reviews that seem to earn the lion's share of Income Share are those posted in the Electronics category. These are the reviews that nonmembers of Epinions are more likely to read for product background and buying information. Yes... this is old news for most members of Epinions. But I am not a frequent poster to the electronics category, so I had no basis for comparison. I posted 31 reviews in February. The one single review on a consumer electronic represented 75% of that month's earnings for me. So then... go find a radio, stereo receiver, disk player or something in your house and write about it. Maybe you'll hit the jackpot, too.  |
