Getting There
Aspen is 180 miles from Denver, 80 miles from Eagle/Vail airport and only 10 miles from Sardy Field directly outside the town. Price vs. distance - for my money I would go to Eagle/Vail and drive the 80 miles through Glenwood Canyon
and up into Aspen. Although it is a jetport Sardy Field is "Socked in" much of the time, making travel iffy. Eagle/Vail has direct flights of 757's from major cities and is only 20% more than flying into Denver International Airport. Try to Avoid Denver airport at all costs,as it is big, unweildy, and extremely SLOW to pass through. The baggage handling is excruciatingly slow and is the butt of endless jokes.
Aspen
For the skier wanting to enjoy resort atmosphere, with shopping for those not skiing along with great restaurants
you can either pick Vail or Aspen. Both are very enjoyable and have their share of Celebrities. Aspen is an older mining town and they has tried successfully to maintain a "town" atmosphere with strict zoning laws that protect the older gingerbread houses that otherwise would have been torn down to be replaced by high rise condominiums.
Skiing
There are four ski areas at Aspen/Snowmass 1. Ajax - the original ski mountain that is mounted via the downtown "silver queen" Gondola. 2. Highlands - medium to hard mountain with some great expert runs. Less crowded than the other mountains.
3.Buttermilk - as the name implies this is their beginner mountain that has green and blue runs. A great beginner mountain with alot of easy terrain. 4. Snowmass - a resort in own right but a mountain that has many high speed lifts and possibly the best and widest variety of cruising runs in the U.S.
The Gant
The Gant sits at the bottom of Ajax mountain in the heart of Aspen, the town. The location makes it great for shopping and dining since the best restaurants in town are just blocks away. Better yet the Gant runs several vans driven by their youthful personel and always ready to whisk
you to whatever eatery you desire.
The Gant sits right against the mountain so you get an excellent view of the mountain.
We came to the Gant in the first week of April and received great discounts on lodging -paying less than half the high season price. Our condominium was on the third floor necessitating our walking up two flights of stairs in our ski boots at the end of the day. But the condo was very nicely laid out with a large foyer for taking off the multiple layers of ski clothing. There were two bedrooms each with their own bath. Furniture was upscale and fixtures were all new and expensive. The kitchen faced onto the living room and had cherry cabinets and granite counter tops. A large living room provided ample room to entertain and watch TV. On the third (top) floor we had cathedral ceilings with a wall of windows facing the mountain. A balcony ran the length of the condo.
The personel was friendly, helpful, and available although there was minimal services offered i.e. no room service. There was no gym but there was a pool and several hot tub areas.
Summary
Gant sits at the foot of Ajax and is a great venue to enjoy the town of Aspen with it's high end shopping and dining along with pricey galleries. It is a condo hotel but ours was clean, modern, and spacious with parking at the door. Prices are excellent in April and rates and specials are posted on the internet under "www.aspen.com".
Only complaints include having to walk up to the third floor on narrows steps.
