My Top Ten

The Bottom Line A little something for everyone- none are too scary (I'm a wimp!)

This top ten list is geared toward teenage females, though I still love most of these, and admit to watching them on occasion! I will not go into extreme detail with each one, though I may venture to write an E-pinion about each some day! These aren't listed in any specific order- enjoy!

1. Girls Just Want to Have Fun Sara Jessica Parker stars as a shy girl from a military family who disobeys her father's wishes when she enters a Dance TV contest. Her best friend is a wild girl played by a young Helen Hunt. Also stars a young Shannon Doherty. A must see! The clothing, the lingo, soooo 80's!

2. Dirty Dancing Ok, need I say much about this film? The soundtrack is fabu, Patrick has some definite moves (thanks to his real-life dance teacher mom, apparently) and Jennifer Grey is lovable despite the nickname "Baby". Baby struggles with her love of the misunderstood Johnny, and her fathers unwillingness to let her grow up. In the end, though, "no one puts Baby in a corner!"

3. Better Off Dead "I want my two dollars!"
This is possibly my all-time fave John Cusack film! There is no way I can get into this film in a few sentences! His girlfriend has left him for a guitar strumming jock, his younger brother is building rockets and successfully learning how to pick up trashy women, his father lectures him on pretty much anything (not undeservingly, might I add), the paperboy is after him, and his next-door neighbors are just too difficult to describe and still do them justice!
Don't miss the skiing scenes near the end- and the mother's cooking is not to be missed- all I have to say is " It has raisins in it... you like raisins..."

4. Say Anything John again- love him! Stars with Ione Skye. This film made me laugh and cry..."I gave her my heart- she gave me a pen." Portrays teen love at its best- and worst!

5. The Craft- A group of teenage girls discover that together, the four of them have astounding powers. Mischief and abuse of power ensues. Creepy bug scene at the end, and I totally dig the fact the the girls play "Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board" at one point- one of my personal slumber party favorites!

6. Romeo and Juliet- The new one, with Leo DiCaprio and Clare Danes. Do I think it is the best adaptation- probably not. Are most teenagers as into Shakespeare as I was? Probably not! I think that this film really opened the world of Shakespeare up for a lot of teens and made it accessible and understandable- not to mention interesting! I love that they maintain the actual text. Other films, which are more drastically updated, but which may interest teens would be "10 Things I Hate About You" and "O"- kudos to Stiles for taking on those projects. If you're really adventurous, try Kenneth Branagh's version of Hamlet.

7. The Breakfast Club The brat pack stars in this classic 80's film about a very diverse group of students trapped together in detention. Opinions are changed, new friends are made, and Molly Ringwald shows the world that one of her most impressive skills is applying lipstick without using her hands.

8. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is probably on everyone's list- for a good reason! Follow Ferris (Matthew Broderick)as he, his beautiful girlfriend and hypochondriac best friend spend a day away from school having one adventure after another. They manage to fool school admintrators, parents and friends- much to the dismay of the school's principal and Ferris' sister (played by Jennifer Grey).

9. Adventures in Babysitting I love this early film of Elizabeth Shue's! She plays a babysitter who must take her wards into the big city to help a friend. Madness ensues!

10. Carrie This is a classic! Watch the prom night horror unfold. I can't say that the acting is great, or the special effects...it is just a must see! Also helps remind impressionable girls why it is a good idea to be kind to that girl in school who doesn't quite fit in!
*Note- Unless I am mistaken (correct me, please if you know otherwise) Sissy Spacek was under contract at the same time as Carrie Fisher, and Fisher was supposed to play Carrie, and Spacek was supposed to play Princess Leia. Fisher objected to appearing nude, so they just swapped actresses. Lucky for Fisher, royalty wise!
