The Bottom Line Proceed with caution-your little ones are the gold of your life.
Right off the bat there is a contingency on Epinions who are not going to like what I have to say about childcare. At this point in my life though, I am getting a bit bolder in asserting my opinion and myself. This is strictly my opinion. First a little background. I am a certified nursery through sixth grade elementary school teacher. I think this gives me a little expertise in this topic. The issue is the best childcare for your sweet cherub and I will tell you right now the best childcare is for you to be a stay at home mom. To those who are already dying to hit the Not Helpful button please just hear me out. There is no instructor or nursery school teacher who will love and nurture your child the way you will. I firmly believe that. Think of how frustrating and patient you must be during moments where your child may not be the perfect model child. Now, picture trying to deal with a stranger’s child and how different the picture looks. The reason nursery school is not the best solution is due to several factors. Firstly, the pay scale is not even equivalent to being a nanny. Unfortunately, sometimes this does impact the care. Prime example. Our local nursery school pays minimum wage scale and gives a week vacation after one year teaching. If the teacher gets sick the time spent off is deducted from the weeks vacation. This policy does nothing to attract the best care for your child. When seeking care, ask about the certification of instructors, how they do background checks and their general employment policy. If the instructors are being paid less than the local babysitter, look to get the equivalent in care. With the advent of so much child molestation, small children in diapers who need to have their diapers changed now presents a major issue at many child care facilities. Often, two teachers must be present to change one infant’s diaper. Many times the facility will try to postpone the changing of the child’s diaper, because the instructor just does not want to assume liability. Often the child will postpone his business until returning home, causing major constipation issues. Check on the diaper-changing situation. The school may not admit to this tandem team diaper changing, but check on this. The other issue here is a sanitary one. Check that the teacher washes her hands frequently after this and that antibacterial soap and towels are readily available in the toilet area. There is a slew of illness that can be passed from one child to the next just based on there diaper changing policies. Ascertain the safety of the playground equipment. My daughter got pushed off a jungle gym at school and because there were wood chips under the equipment got her chin punctured and needed plastic surgery. Make sure the equipment is safe and secure and fenced in. Check to see if sand box equipment outside is covered at night. Often, cats will use this as a litter box. Not the best thing for a little one to be playing with. As a precaution ask if you can drop in at any time and then follow through and do so. Ask how they discipline the children. If there is a lot of yelling and crying, proceed with caution. Despite the certification in education, I chose not to send my children to nursery school. There are circumstances whereby it is completely necessary and in those terms one must accept what needs to be done. In these cases, try to ascertain the above mentioned items. If you have a choice, there is none better than keeping your child by your side to provide the love and attention all toddlers desire and deserve. |
