What the heck is TRIAD anyway?

Mar 25 '02

The Bottom Line In my opinion the Wilson TRIAD technology is the most significant new technology since the Oversize racquet head was introduced.

For those of you who have not read my review on the Wilson product line I reccommend you do so for a more in depth review of what the company is doing as a whole.

My last review of the Wilson product line is nearly one year old, so I felt it would be a good idea to write a new updated review on their newest technology, TRIAD.

Wilson introduced their TRIAD technology last summer with three new racquets.. The TRIAD 2.0, 3.0, 4.0. They claimed that this was thier biggest new technology since they introduced the Hammer technology (head heavy frame)in the late eighties. At the time I was sceptical because I didn't know what else could be done to a tennis racquet. After meeting with my Wilson area rep, I was happy to say I was wrong.

TRIAD technology is a tennis racquet that is actually three seperate pieces. The first piece is the racquet head. This is the area where the power is produced. The second piece is the handle and grip, where most of the comfort of a racquet is. The third piece is a thin layer of Iso-Zorb (similar to an insole of a shoe) that goes between the head and grip sections. This layer of Iso-Zorb can reduce the vibration of the racquet by up to 60%.

The reason TRIAD is such a big deal is because before this technology was introduced you had to sacrifice power for comfort, and vise versa. Power racquets had always produced vibration, and control racquets were more comfortable. By seperating the head and the handle of the racquet, and putting Iso-Zorb in between, Wilson has made it possible to have a super powerful racquet, and also make it very comfortable. Wilson is also able to customize the level of vibration reduction, by altering the thickness of the Iso-Sorb.

Since the first introduction of TRIAD racquets, Wilson has added two new frames to their TRIAD line, the 5.0 and the 6.0. As with all other Wilson racquets the lower the number the more power the racquet has.

I will now break down each TRIAD racquet:

TRIAD 2.0- This racquet is made for players with very short swings, and need the racquet to produce the power for them. The 2.0 features Rollers technology, as well as a super oversize (125")head. This is a very powerful frame, and has a head heavy balance. TRIAD reduces vibration by 60% in this racquet, and I would reccommend it for older players looking for a little more pop on the ball. All of this technology does not come cheap at a retail price of $350.

TRIAD 3.0- This is the best selling racquet in the world. This racquet is also made for players with short swings, but is not nearly as powerful as the 2.0. It has a 115" oversize head, and the vibration is reduced by 60% on this frame as well. It is a head heavy frame, and 3.0 reatils for $300.

TRIAD 4.0- This racquet is geared for intermediate players with medium swings. It packs a powerful punch, but better players may have trouble controlling it. This racquet comes in tewo head sizes, 110" oversize, and 100" midplus. The 4.0 is also a head heavy frame, the vibration is reduced by 51%, and retails for $250.

TRIAD 5.0- This is for the player who wants the comfort of the TRIAD but doesn't need the power the 4.0 provides. It is head heavy like the 4.0 but is more control oriented. This racquet would be great for intermediate to advanced players who prefer a head heavy frame. The vibration is reduced by 42%, and the 5.0 come in two head sizes, 98" miplus and 110" oversize. This racquet retails for $220.

TRIAD 6.0- I was very happy to see the introduction of this racquet at the beginning of the year. This is the first TRIAD to have a head light balance. It is intended for advanced players who want more manuverability, and don't mind a heavier racquet. It only comes in the 95" midplus headsize, and the vibration reduction is 25%, however it feels llike more compared to a traditional racquet. This is the racquet that I use now, and I love it! It retails for $190.

I urge all of you to check out www.wilsonsports.com to get more information. I didn't get into length or weight on any of the racquets, and these are very important things to know before you decide to purchase a new racquet.

I highly reccommend these racquets for every type of player, especially those with arm problems. We have had no problem selling these racquets in our pro shop, and according to Wilson, nobody else has either.
