I recently joined the beta test for orbitz.com, which also went live this week. I've been buying plane tickets online for several years. In fact, its the only way I've EVER bought plane tickets. For a long time I used Expedia and had signed up for the individual airlines "Web-Only" special alerts....and when I heard Orbitz was starting, I signed up.
Orbitz is like all those "Web Only" special alert newsletters (the web specials are offered on the site) into one, which a great search result layout and some other handy interactive features.
The search results are layed out and grouped in a grid style, by price and number of stopovers. I found this particularly helpful, because 9 times out of 10 on other travel sites I will find what I feel is a "great" fare, only to find out I would have to make 2 or 3 stopovers to get it. The prices are also competitive, which is great!
There are several features on the site I liked that I feel are pretty above average. Besides the usual hotels, cars, and package deals, there is a weather guide, a series of "spotlights" on mood spots such as "Relaxing Spots" and "Romantic Spots"--great for if you want to go somewhere---but can't decide. Another great feature are the "last minute" flight deals, which often include hotel. All in All, a good start, however I believe the site was a wee slow due to an influx of traffic.
