Reminiscing (Reply to this comment)

Looking back on this list, I learned a lot about the hip hop world. Although, virtually all albums in your review were good, so many were never released or pushed back a couple years. You did a great job, but what hapenned to the new Black Thought, Rakim & Lauryn Hill albums? Why was Mos Def's album moved back so far?
Good job anyway

I completely disagree with you about Mos Def. He hasn't sold out at all, it's just that conscious rap has become more accepted (and as a result, a little more mainstream) than it was when he first hit the scene. He didn't sell out, the mainstream is just more accepting of his style. How can he sell out when he's only did one solo LP a few years ago?
Yep, dead prez is dropping another one soon. It looks like it's been delayed though. Be on the lookout for it later this year.
No one knows why Talib and Hi-Tek aren't working together. It's rumored that they have beef, but if that's true, then they're keeping it VERY quiet.
I'll have to disagree with you on that Cee-Lo CD. I think it sucked. He sings far too much and the producers aren't that good at creating genuine Funk, Soul, and Gospel tracks. My review is coming soon.
Thanks for the comments!

I enjoyed your quote
Commercial rap has swept through Hip-Hop like a virus, infecting the art with "jiggy" overproduced beats, insipid lyrics, and inane thuggery/gangsterism. Rap music in general has taken a huge dive, with quality and artistic
integrity going right down the toilet
It is currently moving up my top 100 quote list, which I update every week. This quote is very true--most popular music these days is so money-hungry, bland, and commercialized.

Nas, Talib, Common, and Rakim all in the next few months?!!!
I hope they don't fall off. This looks like a good summer comin' up (knock on wood).
Interesting note regarding Mos, heard he's been hangin with Puffy trying to get him to produce some tracks for his new disc. Hoping this is just a case of him trying to influence Puffy, but I have a sick feeling...whaddya think?

Yeah that Horsemen is going to be fire. I hope Dre doesn't push Ra's album back to 2003, but if he absolutely needs to in order to make it perfect, I'm all for it.
I didn't list Dre's because Chronic 2001 wasn't all that great. Compared to the original Chronic it was terrible. I'm doing a wait-and-see on that one.
And I'm not a big fan of Eminem so I didn't list The Eminem Show. Besides, he certainly doesn't need any extra promotion from me. ;)

Yep Soundbombing 3 is coming out, but I usually wait till the jury's out on those Rawkus compilations, especially since they've closed thier doors.
And Onyx is dropping a new album. I still listen to Shut 'Em Down regularly, but I've heard they're going to be trying something a little different with this LP. I don't know what that means, but that's what kept it off the list.

4 Horsemen... mmmmmmm.... (Reply to this comment)

To be honest, i'm just after that 4 Horsemen LP. That is going to be soooooo tight it's unbelievable. Like DVON said, i've kinda given up on Ras Kass, it's taken too long!
I've also heard rumours bout Dre pushing Oh My God back to 2003 which i hope are untrue! I'm looking forward to both Dre and Eminems new solo albums which are 2002 releases - you should have put them in aswell. Still, an impeccable list of some (hopefully) very tight albums.

Good to hear about Common, Kweli, Black Star...hell, a lot of 'em that I didn't know were gonna drop.
I've heard the first cuts from Dead Prez and Rakim's albums -- I'm really not feeling the DP joint at all, and the Ra cut is...well, different. Might take some time to get used to that one, so I'm not giving up on it....D

I Can't Wait... (Reply to this comment)

For Death Of Escobar, Kris Styles and Above The Surface to be released. Also, Canibus mentioned something about a new album this Spring. If you remember Box Cutta, Blade Runna he rapped: "A total riot scene, back and forth they encrypt fiber optic beams/On my album out next spring." We can only hope that C True Hollywood Stories was a hoax and this will be the real album.
After Like Water For Chocolate, I'm hoping that Electric Circus will be just as good. As for Ras Kass, I'm not even waiting for that album anymore. It's been pushed back so many times I could care less.
But with that list of these albums, there's probably going to be another best-selling Jay-Z album, Ja Rule probably going to come out with some more R&B/Pop-Rap.

TBA 2002: Rakim – Oh My God
- The father of modern emceeing returns for the third time since his hiatus, and this time he’s not playing around. Though his first two albums since his return, The 18th Letter and The Master, were impeccable lyrically, it was the lackluster production that kept this rap legend from truly shining on those efforts. Signing with Aftermath records has teamed Ra up with one of the foremost beatmakers in Hip-Hop, Dr. Dre. With Dre’s hot beats supplementing Rakim Allah’s devastatingly sharp lyrics, never has an album been more appropriately titled.
Thanks for the great list.
I can't wait !!
