The Bottom Line Showing kristinafh how it's really done. ;)
* I finally remembered something: Jim Morrison is not the most over-rated "artist" in the history of rock and roll. Janis Joplin is. Thanks to a friend for the reminder. * The Kickovers have their debut album coming out on April 23rd. Who are the Kickovers you ask? Well, they feature former Weezer member Mikey Welch and former Mighty Mighty Bosstones guitarist Nate Albert. I'm very much looking forward to it, Albert is a very under-rated axeman. There's a great article on the Kickovers here:http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/music/cellars/documents/02216493.htm * Pearl Jam is looking to release their rarities collection by the end of the year, and release their seventh album beginning of next. That was in the latest "Rumor Pit", as well as news that the band turned down a spot on The Simpsons a few years ago. That's just inexplicable to me. It's the SIMPSONS! And Was I the only one who caught the April Fools jokes about the rest of the band being upset with Eddie Vedder, and they were going to bring in Chris Cornell to replace him? It sure beat the usual "Eddie's dead" April Fools gags. * Speaking of Vedder, I loved his speech that inducted the Ramones into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The two best comments of the night: "Now it's Disney kids singing songs by old men and being marketed to 6 and 7 year olds." AND "The Ramones played 2269 shows; J'Lo has a lot of catching up to do." His speech was rambling but it was heartfelt and true. That's all you can really ask I think. * It only took him 3 times, but Steven Tyler finally got the National Anthem's last line right on opening day of the Boston Red Sox season at Fenway Park. Jackass. * Speaking of Tyler, that Aerosmith greatest hits set is now all but confirmed. It's pretty bad when you've released as many hits collections as KISS did. * Speaking of artists who have released too many Greatest Hits collections, The Who will issue yet another one as well, with four never before heard songs. (sigh)...oh well, at least I haven't been suckered into any of the other Greatest Hits collections... * So Chris Cornell left the former members of Rage Against the Machine: all together now: WAY TO GO CHRIS! I'm sorry, but this was NOT a match made in heaven, despite what most people thought. Rage's sound doesn't fit Cornell's voice at all. "They'd change their sound." Sorry, but RATM was a one trick pony, and they got two decent albums out of it, but it's been downhill since then. * I know kristinafh already covered this, but can we all agree that there are 533,000 people who should all be brought out to pasture and shot for buying the new Celine Dion disc? * Megadeth finally went away, announcing earlier this month that they were packing it in. My favorite memory of Megadeth remains Ozzfest 98, where only the front row stood for their set (out of sympathy in my mind), while the rest of us recovered from an amazing Soulfly set and we prepared ourselves for Tool and Ozzy himself. Now, if we could just do something about Slipknot and their bastard children, Mushroomhead... * U2 entered a studio recently to record a new track or two for their upcoming "Best of 1990-2000" disc, a companion to the 1980-1990 disc the band released in 1998. Unfortunately, there will be no limited edition two disc set this time around. A shame too, because that second disc of b-sides was what made it a must buy last time. * Mariah Carey is now claiming ex-hubby Tommy Mottola "sabotaged" her Glitter record by getting Ja Rule to do a song with J-Lo instead (the infamous "I'm Real Remix"). Anyways, this is a crock, if for no other reason that Mariah's album bombed not from being sabotaged, but because it was a s*itty album that quite frankly, doesn't come close to touching some of her early efforts. * Speaking of Ja Rule, is there any more annoying "artist" on the face of the musical planet? Celine Dion ain't got nothing on him. * Why can't the Goo Goo Dolls just go away? Jesus they're annoying. I still remember interviews with Johnny Rzeznik and how he said "ok, so I'm not punk rock because I wrote a love song? (referring to Iris)" No, Johnny, you're not punk rock because you wrote a whole album of chinzy and cheesy pop songs, THAT'S why you're not punk rock. Jackass. * Beavis Band, known to most people out of the know as Linkin Park, will be the next to release one of those ridiculous remix albums. I guess that means that Chester Bennington is going to try to sound like Butthead rather than Beavis this time. Jackass. * The more I listen to the song Seein Red by Unwritten Law, the more I love it. Same for that Friends and Family song by Trik Turner. Sure beats the hell out of Hoobastank, Nickelback and Default, quite possibly the three worst rock bands to come out in the last 3 years. * Aside to R Kelly: please find a girl your OWN frickin age. Thank you. Jackass. * Just about 10 years ago this time, the Wayne's World movie soundtrack was the number one album in the country. Five years ago it was Notorious B.I.G.. Scary huh? * And finally, it was 8 years ago today that Kurt Cobain's body was found in Seattle. I don't think I'll ever forget how miserable that weekend was, but I will always remember the healing that took place in the Boston Garden the following Monday, when Pearl Jam and 15,000 fans all healed together. Kurt remains an icon today, and Nirvana will never be forgotten. While this writer feels they always got way too much credit for starting the whole "musical revolution" of the 1990s (it was already under way, Nirvana just ripped the rest of the structure down), they were an important band. With any luck, another band will come along and help rip down the current structure of pop, nu metal, and rap/rock. Music needs a good boot in the a*s, and Kurt Cobain is no longer here to give us one again. I just hope someone else will. |
