Vampire Movies that Don't Suck
Apr 04 '02
The Bottom Line They could be intense, they could be corny, but they're still among my favorites.
As any of my friends will tell you, I am a huge vampire fan. Even my pen name is taken from a fan club for a certain vampire television show. So, in honor of my upcoming birthday, I decided to indulge myself by writing up my personal list of favorite vampire films.
What I mean by favorite, though, is that these are ones that I enjoyed. They might not be classics, but they kept me entertained throughout their entire duration. That's the point of good movies, isn't it? And I would watch them again. And now, on with the Count (one vampire movie, TWO vampire movie, bwa ha ha.... sorry).

10) Buffy the Vampire Slayer
You have to admit, there's something about a movie that spawns the most popular show in WB history (well, now UPN history, but anyway...). Plus, it is always a treat to watch this with several friends and reminisce about when Luke Perry was considered cool.
Basic plot: Buffy Summers has just been informed that she is the Chosen One: the only girl in all of the world with the strength to battle vampires. She must fight against Lothos, the head vampire, while still keeping all of her nails pretty for the school dance.

9)Blood and Donuts
Otherwise known amongst me and my friends as "The Cheesy Vampire Movie of Canadian Doom." Believe me when I say that this movie is bad. However, it keeps you entertained with its corniness, and it's incredible fun to make jokes at its expense.
Basic plot: When man walked on the moon, Boya crawled into a bag to sleep. Now, 25 years later, he's been awakened and learns that the world isn't how he left it.

8)Shadow of the Vampire
This movie surprised me with how good it was. I was not expected a movie based on the making of another movie to be entertaining, but I laughed; I gasped, and I enjoyed myself.
Basic plot: Based on the making of Nosferatu. The director, in order to keep a sense of authenticity, hires a real vampire to play the part of the Count.
~~~~~~~~~~
7)John Carpenter's Vampires
Mindless violence, extreme gore and a small plotline. What more can you want from a vampire movie? The practically non-stop action keeps you on the edge of your seat the first time you watch it, and makes you laugh every time afterward.
Basic plot: A group of vampire hunters are called in to destroy an incredibly strong boss vampire who is trying to perform a ritual to make himself completely immortal.
~~~~~~~~~~
6)Blade II
The newest of my favorites. Though they relied on computers for many of the fight scenes, the action was still impressive and Blade's dry humor continued to steal the show.
Basis plot: Blade gets called in to help his sworn enemies against a more intense threat: the Reapers.

5)My Best Friend is a Vampire
Who said that vampire movies have to scare you? This movie actually mirrors the typical teenager coming-of-age, but with a twist.
Basic plot: Jeremy Capello finds himself becoming a vampire after a tryst with a mysterious woman. Now, he has to keep himself in check while trying to win the affection of his high school crush.
~~~~~~~~~~
4)Vampire Hunter D and D:Bloodlust
I put both the original and the sequel together because they both were absolutely incredible. Anime has a tendency to impress me, but these movies were just amazing.
Basic plot: As a half-vampire or dhampir, D cannot find acceptance from either the humans who he seeks to protect or the vampires that he seeks to kill.
~~~~~~~~~~~
3)Interview with the Vampire
A classic by anyone's standards. Though I still have a slight problem with Pitt's portrayal of Louis, I absolutely love this movie for its loyalty to the book.
Basic plot: 200 year old vampire Louis tells his supernatural story of love, loyalty, and life as the undead.
~~~~~~~~~~~
2)Blade
The vampire action movie of all time. This movie amazed me the first time I watched it, and it still amazes me as I watch it again for the 50th time. Plus, everyone knows that one song.
Basic plot: Half-vampire Blade hunts the true vampires of the night, while trying to find the bloodsucker who killed his mother. When some political unrest occurs among the vampire ranks, Blade has to stop them before the vampire blood-god is resurrected.
~~~~~~~~~~~
AND THE NUMBER ONE MOVIE IS...
1) The Lost Boys
Yes, I know it's from the 80's and yes, I know it has the Corey's, but there's something about this movie that keeps me entertained from the opening credits to the final shutting of the refrigerator door.
Basic plot: Brothers Michael and Sam move to sunny California, where they find their new home to be crawling with vampires. When Michael gets tricked into becoming one, it's a race against time to turn him back to normal. But to do so, Michael, Sam and the Frog brothers must fight against a gang of vampires, their chief, and bad 80's fashion.
Well, that's all of them. I hope you enjoyed and maybe I opened your eyes to a possible must-see.
