The Bottom Line I recommend listening to these songs for the first two or three weeks, but then allowing yourself to move on. It'll give you ample time to mourn your loss.

I was recently dumped by my girlfriend of a year and a half because she "lost the spark" in our love. There was no fighting and no bitterness or anger involved. We'd love to stay friends but we know that can't happen, so to mourn the loss of my love and my best friend, I listen to these songs since they seem to explain how I feel. I know there's a lot of 80's metal in here, but hey, what else was ever as emotional as a power ballad?
Here's the list:

1. Bon Jovi - Always: This was our song to each other, and basically sums up how I feel towards her. I think many people can relate. I’ve included the entire set of lyrics because the whole thing is relevant:

This Romeo is bleeding
But you can see his blood
It's nothing that some feelings
That this old dog kicked up

Its been raining since you left me
Now I'm drowning in the flood
See I've always been a fighter
But without you, I'd give up

Now I can't sing a love song
Like the way it's meant to be
Well I guess I'm not that good anymore
But baby thats just me

And I will love you, baby, always
And I'll be there forever and a day, always

I'll be there til stars don't shine
Til the heavens burst
and the words don't rhyme
I know when I die, you'll be on my mind
And I love you, always

Now the pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some of them made us laugh
Some of them made us cry
Why they made have to say goodbye

What I'd give to run my fingers through your hair
Touch your lips, to hold you near
When you say your prayers, try to understand
I've made mistakes, I'm just a man

When he holds you close
When he pulls you near
When says the words you've been meaning to hear
I wish I was him, with those words of mine
To say to you til the end of time

And I will love you, baby, always
And I'll be there forever and a day always

If you told me to cry for you, I could
If you told me to die for you, I would
Take a look at my face, there's no price I won't pay
To say these words to you

Well there ain't no luck in these loaded dice
But baby if you give me just one more time
We can pack up our old dreams and our old lives
We'll find a place where the sun still shines

2. Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle: This song make me think of how I felt about her, too. It also makes me think of all the things we did together and how we never go to do all the things that we talked about before our relationship came to an end. Here’re the lyrics:

If I could save Time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
'Til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

3. Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry: This song is all about breaking up and it tries to comfort the dumpee with gentle words explaining what is happening. Totally relevant:

Talk to me softly
There's something in your eyes
Don't hang your head in sorrow
And please don't cry
I know how you feel inside I've
I've been here before
Somethin's changin' inside you
And don't you know

Don't you cry tonight
I still love you baby
Don't you cry tonight
Don't you cry tonight
there's a heaven above you baby
And don't you cry tonight

Give me a whisper
And give me a sigh
Give me a kiss before you tell me goodbye
Don't you take it so hard now
And please don't take it so bad
I'll still be thinking of you
And the times we had... baby

And please remember that I never lied
And please remember
how I felt inside now honey
You gotta make it your own way
But you'll be alright now sugar
You'll feel better tomorrow
Come the morning light now baby

4. Guns N' Roses - November Rain: Another perfect way for Axl Rose to talk about a breakup. This time he’s the one who has lost his love because she simply stopped loving him—probably the most painful way to end a relationship as mine way and I was on the side that he’s singing from:

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same

'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain

We've been through this such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain

But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walking away

If we could take the time to lay it on the line
I could rest my head
just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
in the cold November rain

Do you need some time.. on your own
Do you need some time.. all alone
Everybody needs some time.. on their own
Don't you know you need some time.. all alone

I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you

Sometimes I need some time.. on my own
Sometimes I need some time.. all alone
Everybody needs some time.. on their own
Don't you know you need some time.. all alone

And when your fears subside
and shadows still remain
I know that you can love me
when there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
we still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
even cold November rain

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one

5. Poison - Every Rose has its Thorn: This song acknowledges that something is wrong with the relationship and tries to figure out what happened to cause the pain. Then as it progresses, the breakup takes place and he gets hurt to see her with someone else in the future, but he asks her to understand that no one is perfect:

We both lie silently still
in the dead of the night
Although we both lie close together
We feel miles apart inside
Was it something I said or something I did
Did the words not come out right
Though I tried not to hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess that's why they say
Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn
Yeah it does
I listen to our favorite song
playing on the radio
Hear the DJ say loves a game of easy come and
easy go
But I wonder does he know
Has he ever felt like this
And I know that you'd be here somehow
If I could have let you know somehow

Though it's been a while now
I can still feel so much pain
Like a knife that cuts you the wound heals
but the scar, that scar remains
I know I could have saved a love that night
If I'd known what to say
Instead of makin' love
We both made our separate ways
But now I hear you found somebody new
and that I never meant that much to you
To hear that tears me up inside
And to see you cuts me like a knife

6. Metallica - Fade to Black: Please don’t take this song too literally because it tends to be suicidal in thought, but even just the sound of the guitar makes you feel sad and like life is not getting worse and worse…just like you feel after a breakup:
Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filing me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now He's gone
No one but me can save myself, but it to late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death Greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye

7. Guns N' Roses – Patience: Here’s a song that hopes to get the relationship back together in time. This sounds familiar to me because my ex told me she just needed a little time alone, and even though I know it’ll never happen, I want to believe that in the back of my heart. Axl Rose must’ve been through a lot of bad breakups because so many of his songs are centered on that gloomy aspect of life:

Shed a tear 'cause I'm missin' you
I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now
Was a time when I wasn't sure
But you set my mind at ease
There is no doubt
You're in my heart now

Said, woman, take it slow
It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
Said, sugar, make it slow
And we come together fine
All we need is just a little patience
(patience)
Mm, yeah

I sit here on the stairs
'Cause I'd rather be alone
If I can't have you right now
I'll wait, dear
Sometimes I get so tense
But I can't speed up the time
But you know, love
There's one more thing to consider

8. The Beatles – Yesterday: Paul McCartney understood it as well as anyone else ever will. The title alone explains it all. For those of us who were shocked by the breakup and it seemed to come out of nowhere, this song makes perfect sense:

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

9. The Beatles - Let it Be: This is the song that is meant to comfort everyone. It seems so honest and convincing that everything will be better if we don’t stress too much over it:

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on 'till tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

10. The Bealtes - The Long and Winding Road: This is one of the saddest Beatles songs that I know of. Paul seems to want to get back to his girlfriend and no matter what he tries, nothing works and he’s begging her to take him back:

The long and winding road that leads to your door
Will never disappear, I've seen that road before
It always leads me here, lead me to your door

The wild and windy night the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears crying for the day
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way

Many times I've been alone and may times I've cried
Anyway you'll never know the many ways I've tried

And still they lead me back to the long and winding road
You left me standing here a long, long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to your door

Well, hopefully this helps you get over your breakup. It didn’t help me much…in fact, I think it made me sadder, but there is definitely a significant mourning period through which all of us have to survive to become stronger people. Bottling up your emotions doesn’t get you anywhere, so feel free and listen to this mix while you look at old pictures and reminisce on your best times with your ex.
