Just had to comment... (Reply to this comment)

Scanning through your bio and saw this link, not realizing I had already rated it a year ago. I remember the first time I NIP'ed, desperately trying to use a blanket to keep me covered, but it kept slipping off my shoulder and landing on her face. The last time I NIP'ed (probably when she was around 12 months old) was at the Great Mall of Milpitas (a HUGE outlet center). Imagine about 500 people walking by in the 20 minutes that I nursed. I just sat on a bench and really didn't give a d@mn. Funny how things change after a while. :)

That's what my husband used to call my LaLeche League group...aren't men droll? I practiced long-term breastfeeding and baby-led weaning with my four boys and was also a proponent of the family bed. I never missed out on sleep when I had a new baby and in all their childhood my boys never had one single nightmare. There's nothing like a milk drunk little face gazing adoringly up at you and feeling a pudgy little hand give you a loving pat. I really enjoyed your essay.

wow! It's great to find another breast feeding mom who isn't afraid to nurse her child in public, and share the experience with others. Thank you.

I also breastfed... (Reply to this comment)
by mattygroves
...for around a year - about the time I was thinking enough was enough, she was too - so that worked well!
I had (here in England) some of the same trouble - when my daughter was 8 weeks old, we went to a family reunion. At 8 weeks, she was feeding often and for a long time. The family (my husband's family) had set up what was practically an isolation chamber for me - as if breastfeeding were a contagious disease! I gave up on that quick!
The great thing about breastfeeding for such a long time was that my daughter never had a bottle - I hate seeing 3 year olds with bottles of Coke dangling from their mouths - I always wonder what their teeth'll be like!
Great review!
Cheers,
Kate

Great choice (Reply to this comment)

and a milestone I can easily identify, being a Labor and Delivery Nurse for 20 years. But before that, I remember when I was breastfeeding a hundred years ago (or it seems like) and getting over that embarrassment was hard at first. It usually bothered the people "in public" places more than me.
Now there is a whole line of clothing, for breast feeding Moms, that are designed to keep the process discreet.
Sorry about babbling, but I was tripping over one of my own milestones! I do remember one very curious little boy, about 5, who watched me nurse for 10 minutes. He finally asked "Which one of those is CHOCOLATE?".
Congratulations on a real accomplishment...nothing is really better than your year!
Stay well...Jude

Society needs to be more excepting (Reply to this comment)

Come to think of it, I have never seen someone breast feeding their baby in public. I think most people pump the breast milk into a bottle at home and feed the baby from the bottle. Society needs to be more excepting on such a natural thing.

. . . there are few more natural - yet wonderful - sights than a mother nursing her child.
While we were in Europe last year, many of the museums had images of a nursing Madonna.
Congratulations on your milestones.
Great posting.

Freak,
If she had balls, she couldn't breastfeed! Don't you know anything!
MT,
Great review. Thanks for being part of the write-off and congrats on a truly wonderful milestone.I'm sure you and your son will have many more terrific milestones over the coming years.

This review was a bust! (Reply to this comment)
by Suzer
Well, it would be cool to say that, but of course it was excellent. I nursed one kidlet and bottle fed the other, so you could say I went "both ways". I preferred nursing and the special feeling I derived from it, and the benefits it gave my younger son, but people have to do what is best for them.
I was always discreet in public, but there will be people who have problems with it either way. I'm sure you and your son look "cute" nursing.

Hopefully I will make it to a year with my baby too-one month down, 11 to go! Unfortunately, I'm not as brave as you in public. I usually end up going out to my car, and feeding there *laugh* Can you believe I spent months of my son's breastfeeding experience in the bathroom? I just couldn't do it in public. I think it's that large chest thing again... Great article!!!

Been there too :-) (Reply to this comment)

While I did NOT reach my breastfeeding goal of 1 year with my youngest child who is now 22 months old, we did make it to the 9 month mark and I have many similar breastfeeding in public stories of my own. I found that nursing a newborn in public was simple, only I learned very quickly not to wait until he was starved to death or EVERYONE in a 1 mile radius would know what I was doing :-)
But once they get older, it's not so easy anymore. They are more curious and will suddenly "latch off" without warning to look around and see what is going on around them as they don't want to miss anything. And if your breast is bared for the whole word to see....well, they could care less!
Cherish this special time and consider yourself lucky for making it as far as you have. I certainly miss this special bonding experience I had with both of my sons as those times in my life passed by all too quickly......

It's great to see mothers who choose to breastfeed for more than a few weeks or months. You beat me, I nursed for 1 year with each of my 3. It was bittersweet to give it up, but I enjoyed having my body back when weaning was over.
Great review and you'll be shocked at how quickly he forgets about your breasts once he's weaned!

You are much braver than me. An ironic statement from someone who will wear a thing on the beach huh?
I never breast fed so I never had to do the public thing ... but you got balls girlie! I'm not sure I'd be able to do that but your review did make a very valid point. Especially about the "would you want to eat your dinner in the bathroom" statement.
