Nothing in Houston for beer shopping other than Spec's? We're in need of some alternatives. Time for you to open your own place, Mark.

I've actually yet to hit Baltimore, but it's on the itinerary for our next trip up the coast. Thanks for pointing out where to pick up some great brews there, as well as in Houston.

Cheers!

I went shopping for dinner stuff today (Bratwürst and the like; hadn't had German food in a while), and ended up spending an hour checking out the beer and wine selections at one of my favorite places: Alpine Village in Torrance. Came back with a haul of goodies: Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier (both the Märzen and Urbock), EKU 28, Zywiec Porter, the 2000 release of Samichlaus (Austria), and some German wines that no one has never heard of before. My wife just raises her eyebrows (she's a Bud or Corona drinker, and easily puts away one six-pack a year; usually during the holidays), and wonders what I am going to do with all the strange beers I buy. (Duh.)

I've only been to Houston once... stayed at a place near the airport (Hobby, I think it was called), and spent the day at the LBJ Space Center before heading off for The Big Easy. What I remember about HOU was that there was this huge 60 mile ring of freeway that circled the city. It was incredible how flat and spread-out everything was. Baltimore (I was last there in '98) is a town I liked... 'specially for crab cakes and seafood.

I do believe, Mark, that it is your turn to host some kind of beer or spirit-related write-off. Even a travel write-off. Let me know if you dream up anything, and count me in as a participant. Even if it's a travel write-off about Texas. I will regale readers with my stories of the golf-ball sized hail I once experienced on the road to San Antonio, and then I will put everyone to sleep with my favorite breakfast spot (on The Riverwalk, drinking spicy Bloody Marys, eating Chorizo tacos, watching the tourists float by on the flat boats).

Cheers (and get some action in on a write-off of your own),

Tom / 4-1-1
