The Bottom Line Placing you child in daycare can be a positive experience for the whole family as long as you give it a chance.
Anyone who surfs the net and lurks around parent chat boards can tell you daycares are a major debate. There are parents who see nothing wrong with placing their child in some type of child care setting and then there are those who feel it is the worst thing you could do is have another person care for your child the majortiy of the day. I am on the side with those parents who are in favor of daycare. Now you may say I am impartial because I work in a daycare but I also have a child in a daycare. I started working in a daycare about 3 years ago. I started out as an aide in the 4 yr. old classroom and I am now in charge of that class. I have my CDA (child developement credential) and I am currently working towards my degree in education. My daughter is currently in the 1 yr old class at the center. Putting your child in a daycare center is a major decision and shouldn't be taken lightly. Relatives took care of my daughter until I decided the center was right for her. There are many factors you need to consider. First and most important is what type of childcare setting is right for your child. You have many to choose from ; family childcare, child care centers, Montessori schools and for preschool age children there is the Head start program. If you decide one a center there are many things to look for besides of what the atmosphere is like in a classroom enviroment. Most daycare centers are liscensed by the Department of Welfare. The department of Welfare requires certain regulations be met in the center. On of the most important regulations is the child/teacher ratio. That is the amount of children allowed to one teacher. In Philadelphia the ratio is as follows: Infant- 4:1 Age 1-2- 5:1 Age 2-3- 6:1 Age 3-5- 10:1 To find out what your states ratio is, you can contact the Department of Welfare on your own or you can ask the center your are looking at for their DPW code book. There are many other things to look for when choosing a center. I am not going to go into them all because the person who wrote an epinion before me seemed to cover most of the things I wanted to say. Just remember choosing a center may seem overwhelming but as long as you keep in mind your child's needs as well as your own you should be alright. |
