I have been very sick for eight days now. I have not had a smoke in 5 days. I don't have any nigaten in my system at all. Every now and then I want a cigeratte. Why? I also am eatting again for the first time in eight days too. Is this because I'm finally on my way to being better or is it cause I want that cigeratte? Do you have any comments for me to know what I should do to not have this cigeratte?

education (Reply to this comment)

It may seem silly for me, a 23-years-old to give you advice about your kid's education, but there it goes: don't bug them too much about not smoking, or if you find them smoking punish them or something; it will only make them to want more to smoke.

I quit for 5 months, and was miserable as the products of smoking were brought to the surface by the cilia in the mucous membranes. But as soon as a major stress hit, I succumbed to the habit again.
I have nothing but admiration for your milestone, and I will be thinking about your advice , and tips ...maybe I can quit. Thanks!
Hi Jude,
I do know exactly what you mean about feeling sick. I think I spent about a week with flu-like symptoms, and I didn't feel good, I felt cranky!!
It took some time to feel good, it's one of those cases of the end justifying the means I guess.
You will quit when you're ready, and I hope you have great success when you decide to do it!

You almost convinced me! (Reply to this comment)

I know exactly how bad the habit is, I have seen smokers lungs from the inside. It doesn't help me, and I am ashamed of my habit, although I must say the more people tell me to quit, the longer I stubbornly want to hang on to the habit. It is a major flaw in my personality.

Now how crazy and addictive is that?
I kept right on smoking through bronchitis, so I believe it. I am glad you made it through!

Each morning I tell myself that I am not going to have a smoke today. The days add up to weeks, the weeks to months, and the months to years.
Good tip, and good for you too!

My cousin's ex refused to have kids with her (This is going back 17 years) unless she quit smoking and she was a heavy smoker who had tried. But that was a motivator and she quit and never smoked again..good for you. And your kids - ps. my daughter works for the American Cancer Society in the anti-tobacco department!

Quitting smoking was harder . . . (Reply to this comment)
by ed_grover
than quitting drinking. I only have about four years in on this one and used the prescription Zyban, which may not be for everyone. It sure helped me after 50-some years of puffing away, day by day. I even smoked through my oral cancer treatments. Now how crazy and addictive is that?
Great review and congratulations.

. . . reforming smoker.
While I have not had a drag of the "noxious weed" in several years - I have not lost the urge.
Each morning I tell myself that I am not going to have a smoke today. The days add up to weeks, the weeks to months, and the months to years.
Not lighting up that next cigarette is probably the best present I have given myself.
Great posting.

It's always helpful... (Reply to this comment)
by 4-1-1
when people share their smoking & quitting experiences.
I was never a cigarette smoker. Didn't like the taste. My dad smoked 2-packs a day and died at age 56.
I started smoking cigars when I was about 19. One a day for about five years. Then I quit smoking altogether. Lost interest in tobacco. Five years later, I slowly started again. For the past two years, I've been smoking about five or six cigars a week. Moderation in everything. That it the key.
Cheers,
Tom / 4-1-1

I have been smoke free for 4 years after being a confirmed smoker for about 25 years.
It really is a great milestone to achieve !!
I agree with the one smoke philosophy, treat smoking as seriously as alcoholics treat drinking... all it takes is one puff to keep the habit going.
Well done !!
Christine :)

This is a great editorial and a wonderful milestone. I remember when my parents' stopped smoking what a big deal it was in our family.
I remember a comedian once saying, "Kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray. That's something to keep in mind if you're ever lonely."
Congrats on your achievement and may it give you the years to enjoy many more milestones with your family.
