Puerta Villarta or Cabo San Lucas? (Reply to this comment)
by sherndon
!! ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE?!!
My husband & I live in Texas and can't decided if we should vacation in Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas. We have taken several cruises to the Caribbean and Gulf side of Mexico, but this time, we decided to explore the Pacific side of Mexico. We love the beach, snorkeling and being outdoors in general. Is the water as clear in PV or Cabo as it is in the Caribbean? Which location is better for snorkeling? Overall, would you recommend PV or Cabo for a greater vacation experience- for water sports and general relaxation? We have decided to stay in a all-inclusive resort no matter which location we choose. Your comments are appreciated. S Herndon- Longview, TX

Re: Cruissing the Mexican Riviera in the summer is not a good idea (Reply to this comment)

We vacation in Mexico in the summer frequently because rates are lower - except for the cruise industry who raises rather than lowers prices in the summer.
Early June is fine - the really rainy season does not begin until July and the further south you go, the rainier it is. So, PV will get a lot of rain whereas Cabo, which is a desert, will remain quite hot and dry.
Unlike the Caribbean, where it will rain for a while, followed by periods of sun and then more rain, PV, on the Pacific coast will remain cloudy and rainy all day. It won't be cold, but it will be pretty miserable. That lasts until mid-September. Mazatlan will get a little less rain, but even there, it's more like PV than Cabo.
What generally happens in the summer is you will get 4-5 rainy days in a week, with two really nice days (between storms). You may get to PV on one of those two nice days, if you are lucky. But a wet and cloudy day won't kill your time there. Like I said, we vacation in Puerto Vallarta all the time - in the summer we can get a weeks accommodation with flights at an all inclusive resort for $400pp whereas in the fall or spring, you'll pay $1500 for the same package.
Hope this helps.

More Info If Possible (Reply to this comment)

Suzi or anyone else who knows,
We're also from So. Cal and will be leaving on the Pride soon. I'd like to get more details on your do-it-yourself excursion in Puerto Vallarta (see below)
You can email me direct at CrossClan2@msn.com...
For example:
> Where's the best place to rent the jeep?
> Can you reserve it ahead of time and not worry about beating the crowd?
> Where can I get a map to find El Eden or do you have specific directions on how to get to Mismalaya and El Eden?
> Where can I rent snorkel equipment for the day?
> Is it safe to be off on your own ?
Suzi Paragraph from Mexican Riviera Shoe Excursions...
Snorkel & Jungle. The best way to do this is on your own. Rent a Jeep and plan to spend the day at Mismaloya and El Eden (the jungle where they filmed the "Predator"). You can rent a jeep (about $60-$75US) at the port and get directions. It's a fun trip, south of PV, and one of my favorites. Go to Mismaloya and spend the morning snorkeling and hiking around the old movie set "The Night of the Iguana." Then head up the hill to El Eden, where you can play among water falls and granite boulders. On the way back to the port, stop off in town to do a little shopping. This tour, offered on the ship, is one of the best. They take you up the mountain in small busses, but you get none of the excitement of driving it your self. Jeeps at the port go fast, so make sure you're one of the first ones off the ship in the morning.

Cruissing the Mexican Riviera in the summer is not a good idea???? (Reply to this comment)
by yoyalinda
Hello Suzie,
My family and I (3 teenagers) are planing our very first cruisse for the summer of 2006. We would like to go to the Mexican Riveira. Your page was exactly what I was looking for, very interesting, informative and complete information of the area. But I was dessapointed to read that the summer is not the best time to cruisse this area, due to bad rain falls. Could you please give us more information about this concern, and if there is anybody who has cruised the MR in the summer and would like to give us their experience would it be very much appreciated. We are thinking the PRIDE CARNAVAL.
Thank you, Yoya Larocca

I am taking a cruise to these three ports in mid March on a new ship...Diamond Princess. Loved this review and i will follow much of its advice. I am looking into excursions booked online thru locals to save some money. I am travelling with my son and his fiance who are in their early 20's. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

SLO County Resident? (Reply to this comment)

Suzi, please email me. I think I went off some of this very advice 14 years ago from you. I'm going on a cruise again in June with my dh and stumbled across this review. I used to babysit for Janet, we lived across the street. If this doesn't sound right to you, just send me a "get lost" note. Otherwise, I'd really like to hear from you. I checked out the El Cid online and got a virtual tour, yep, still the same.

Thanks for such a fact filled review!
I should have read this one before I asked questions on your Elation review! After reading this I am thinking the renting of a couple of jeeps would be the way to go. The kids would love the forest and waterfalls!
Thanks for the info!
