channel-surfing onto it about 10 minutes in. We found it quite hilarious, though it does drag toward the end with the twist you mention. Glenn Close is phenomenal as Granny. I wouldn't have even recognized her!
As for the similarities to a character in Over the Hedge, it could very well have been based on the comic rather than the movie. It's a hilarious character, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it as an inspiration.
