The Bottom Line n/a
So you say you're sick of the teenage, pop music w*ores who have no talent other than a small a*s and a big pair of t*ts? You want to see someone emerge who is real, who acts like a teenager, but has some real talent? In that case, meet the members of Noelle; yes, this is a band, fronted by a 16 year old girl who let's her heart do the singing, and her bandmates do the talking. I've wanted to write this Epinion for a while now, but the problem was that I couldn't find the band's debut CD, This Summer, anywhere. You see, if I lived in California, that wouldn't be a problem. But I live in the same damn TOWN as this band, Waltham, Massachusetts. I finally found it last week, and I was pretty impressed. I didn't want to buy the hype at first. I mean, this is WALTHAM, we're best known for helping to start the American Industrial Revolution, followed by our watches and Grover Cronin's (to those of you who scratch your head at that last one, I say "EXACTLY!"). Ironically, I have a small link to this band and never even knew it. It seems that my friend Rich's sister has been friends with Noelle LeBlanc for a while now, and if there's one person whose musical tastes I feel I can trust, it is Rich's: "Dude, I'm telling you, they are worth the hype. They are really frickin good." I still needed to hear the album to be sure. All of the songs were written by Dave Pino, a guitarist who used to be in the band called Waltham. Ironically, they weren't really written with Noelle in mind, it just kind of happened that these would be the songs that would make up Noelle's debut. What's ironic about the songs is that they have a strong teenage girl mentality to them, despite being written by an older teenage male. In an interview with a local paper, LeBlanc cracked that "Dave was a 15 year old girl when he was 17 or 18, writing those songs." The band's album is a melding of rock, pop, and punk. Lyrically, it is, in many ways, the perfect picture of high school confusion and angst, tremor and terror. Pictures of lockers from Waltham High School adorn the back cover and the CD booklet. LeBlanc sounds like a mix of a young Kay Hanley, with some of the forlorness of a Christie Hynde. Musically, the band is pretty tight on the record, and while the overall high school theme can become tiring sometimes, you see the potential that is there. They have also gone through lineup changes in the past 6 months that would make any band cringe. Drummer Adam Rourke, who helped create the band, left it, and he was replaced by Dustin Hengst. Guitarist Pat McEnenae left as well, ironically to be replaced by Pino on a full time basis. Mike Vazquez rounds out the foursome on bass. Last week, the band attended the Boston Music Awards, having been nominated twice, but they did not take anything home. More importantly though, the band has been all but signed, sealed and delivered to RCA records. Because LeBlanc is still in high school, those of you not in the New England area probably won't be able to check them out until this summer. And they won't be known as Noelle anymore either: they'll be known as Demone, and yes, it is after the infamous Fast Times at Ridgemont High character. In addition, the band has written about 132 songs: yes, I'd say that first major label release will be out pretty quickly. While the band hasn't decided if that release will be a revamping of This Summer or a mix, or all new songs, you can be sure that you'll be hearing about this band. OK, so they're not known as Noelle anymore, but there's no doubt that that's who the attention will shift to in this group. Yeah, it's refreshing to see a teenage girl with talent make it. It's just even more refreshing to know that Waltham, Massachusetts will be the death, at least for the moment, of the teenage w*ore in music. Extraneous Info To order This Summer, you can head on over to the band's website at http://www.noelletheband.com For those of you in the Boston area, the band has two gigs coming up: April 29th at the Middle East downstairs, and May 2nd at the House of Blues. |
