Quality Film Making Art Times 10Apr 20 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line No work of art is ever better than another. It is only different. The best art challenges its audience to higher levels of thinking. Hype is not a good thing. These films are an honest representation of what I consider to be quality in film. Some are not long some are not obvious, and some are downright disgusting to others. I found them very interesting. I particularly like studies in reality. I think it is important to make the audience aware of a higher level of thinking. The works speak for themselves. If you haven't seen them, you perhaps should. 1. Breakfast at Tiffany's Truman Capote's short story is well done here, and the casting is excellent. An excellent example of excellence in film making. 2. Dr. Zhivago. Certainly respectful of the Russian people. Boris Pasternak would be proud of this effort. I find myself still playing Lara's Theme given so eloquently to the world by Maurice Jarre. 3. Star Wars. Lucas Films gave the world a new art form, and Mr. Williams' music certainly will live for a long time. 4. Alien This was the scariest film I ever saw. I had to clean the pool at night immediately after having seen this. The automatic robot that constantly scrubbed the floor of the pool took on an entirely different character under these circumstances. 5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest There is justice in the world. And everyone can contribute to society. 6. The King and I "Hello Young Lovers wherever you are..." was the very song that led me to want to do theater. Happily I lived long enough to participate in a production of that play. The movie is one of the finest examples of this art form. 7. The Illustrated Man This should be required viewing for all bigots. 8. Unbreakable. Reality is bent 5 ways from Sunday in this film. Bruce Willis turns in an astounding performance as do the others involved with this project. 9. Hamlet The Mel Gibson performance is memorable to me. Ophelia was rendered very well and sensitively in this version, which was dead on with the script. 10. The Jazz Singer Simply because it should not be forgotten. There are many others. Too numerous to count. These stand out in my mind as landmarks. Certainly films such as: The Matrix, The Red Violin, Shindler's List, or Jurassic Park should not be ignored. The requirement was for the top 10. Not the top 100. Maybe I shall return to this assignment in ten or twenty years and make a new list. It will certainly be different. |
