Impertinent Thoughts On Pertinent Subjects X

The Bottom Line Still the ORIGINAL Epinions Rant on Music...

* Is it just me or am I being ripped off as much as Puff Daddy rips other people off? Just wonderin...I do kind of see it as a sign of respect, so yeah, thanks. =)

* Speaking of P Diddy, apparently while opening for N'Sync in Boston a couple of weeks ago, he ended up playing J-Lo's duet with Ja Rule (I'm Real), except he sang live when it was time for Ja Rule to do his little deals. Dude, she's out of your life, get over it already. Not to mention this is a new low even for YOU in ripping off other people's songs.

* Since the last installment of this column, the music industry has lost two extremely popular performers. First, Layne Staley, lead singer of one of the Big Four Seattle bands of the early 90s, Alice in Chains, was found dead in his Seattle home, surrounded by drug paraphernalia. Personally, I was never a huge fan of Staley's (Jerry Cantrell had a much better voice that didn't depress the hell out of me), but he was able to convey a lot of emotion and range. His best album though wasn't even an AIC record: his work on the Mad Season side project was by far his best stuff. I have trouble having any sympathy for Staley, as one only needs to look at Scott Weiland to know that heroin can be overcome. And to those who are trying to act as if Staley was a legend, I say please. He hadn't done anything but three songs in SIX YEARS (two new ones for the Alice box set, and the Pink Floyd cover with Tom Morello et al). He was too busy doing drugs to continue with his music career. R.I.P Layne, I can't help but think you might finally be happy for once...

* Second, Lisa Left Eye Lopes of TLC fame was killed in a car crash just one week after Staley's body was found. Now hey, I love Waterfalls as much as the next person (hell I think a lot of TLC's stuff is decent), but if she becomes the next "Aaliyah legend in the making," well I swear, I'm gonna have to bust some heads open...I'm serious. R.I.P. Lisa.

* So it took a whole, what, one month for Andrew W.K. to sell his soul to Miller Beer? I'm watching TV and all of a sudden I'm seeing Party Hard and It's Time To Party as beer theme music...that's the quickest sell out in music history I do believe...oops, nope, forgot about the biggest d*ck in the music industry, Moby.

* Speaking of Moby, he started his own promotional process for his new album by answering Eminem's own barbs...he basically said that Eminem had talent but because of his misogynistic and violent lyrics that he couldn't stand him. Personally...I just can't stand Moby, who, by the way, is launching the AREA:TWO tour this summer with David Bowie, among others.

* Am I the only one who wonders why Sevendust is the only nu metal band who hasn't gone huge? Hmmm, that's a good opening line for when I finally get around to review their Animosity album. But here is where I have to give Creed some major props. Creed has been friends with Sevendust for a very long time, they've been hugely supportive of one another. Sevendust took out nearly every major nu metal act and helped break them: Staind, Limp Bizkit, P.O.D. etc, and no one has returned the favor...except for Creed. So for once, I give major props to Scott Stapp and Co.

* Speaking of nu metal, the band that singlehandedly created the genre, Korn, is back with a new single on radio and a new album due out in June. And may I just say that that new single, titled Here to Stay, rocks as hard as anything they've done since their self titled debut.

* In one last nu metal note, there is no nu metal band I'm more ashamed to admit I own a CD of than Coal Chamber. Talk about bad bad BAD buying decisions (I plead insanity for the record, I was 18 and lost).

* Anyone else just wish that Tweet would just shut her tweeter and fly far far away?

* In certification news, congrats to Michelle Branch on reaching platinum with her debut record. God knows you deserve it.

* Am I the only one who finds this John Mayer character really annoying? Dude, enough with the Dave Matthews-isms, and please, get off my MTV2.

* Speaking of annoying, that new Sum 41 song for the Spider Man soundtrack is irritating as hell. I liked Fat Lip as much as the next person but god, just GO AWAY!

* In another Creed note, I just want to wish Scott Stapp a speedy recovery from his car accident last week, which delayed the band's tour. Sure, I've joked about Scott Stapp a lot in these columns, but I would never wish death on him or anything (just a serious serious decline in sales).

* It looks like things are going very well in the studio for Jane's Addiction, the seminal late 80s/early 90s act that many people credit with the rise of the Seattle bands and Stone Temple Pilots. This is excellent news if I do say so myself.

* And lastly, I know, and I do mean I KNOW, I can't be the only one who wonders how the hell Usher sells so many damn albums. Every one of his songs sounds the same to me...I realize that's a normal cop out, but with him it's the truth. He gets this month's JACKASS award.
