Coupons Save Me Big Money (Reply to this comment)
by stephiskids76
I also use coupons to stockpile, however, I am subscribed to an awesome service called couponsense, available in Arizona and Nevada that matches the sale ads with the coupons and tells me what I will pay for the item, I also get a great rate on my newspaper subscription. I get 6 copies of the Sunday paper for cheap since I subscribe to the newsletter. It isn't unusual to save 50% -70% every time I go to the store. There are also several things that I have stocked my pantry with for absolutely FREE. I do not clip my coupons until needed, taking the hassle out of it completely.

What a great article! (Reply to this comment)

Thank you for posting this. While it doesn't really contain any new information for most of us out there, it does help me, and others (i'm sure) remember that having a plan and buying for the long haul is well worth the initial investment, especially if you can get a whole bunch of items for free or close to it.

A lot of great.... (Reply to this comment)

...and practical advice. I particularly like the binder idea. Being able to see the coupons at a glance would make it so much simpler, and I'm sure much faster too.
Great review....kath

Great Advice... (Reply to this comment)
by groverchick
I have five cats and I need all the help I can get. When that sunday paper comes out here I am sitting in the middle of the room clipping away.
The money I have saved using coupons has really helped me out and I'm glad that I have started clipping at an early age. I have to start checking into some trading groups though.
Thanks for the tips.

Here's another cost savings idea (Reply to this comment)
by Penguinlady
I used to coupon, but it got to the point where my time was worth more than even the double coupons, especially for one or two people, so I rarely do it now. Once I retire next month, though, I'll probably pay more attention to those coupons. Thanks for the tip about the on-line coupon sites.
I think you could save a lot if you stopped buying prepared foods and bought the raw ingredients instead. A box of mac-and-cheese costs a lot more than a box of macaroni and a chunk of cheese. Ditto the various Helpers I see on the shelves; read the ingredient lists and make your own. You can make big batches at once and store them in ziplocks. I do that with biscuit and pancake mixes. I also like being in control of the ingredients, omitting preservatives, and being sure that it's all fresh. Not to mention the money it saves.
Thanks for a helpful review - I'm going to try coupons again once I have the time.

If you have a Wal-Mart that you LIKE (ours is very clean!), you can always shop in one place for anything that is on sale elsewhere. Wal-Mart will match all sale prices for stores they are in competition with, like any local grocery store, department store, etc ... Saves you from going from store to store. But I realize not every Wal-Mart is a good one. Or, you could get a part-time job there and save 10% on all non-food items. That's what I did! (OK, I didn't get the job for the discount, but it's a nice perk *S*)

Re: while you make (Reply to this comment)

I have it a bit worse than that. I am taking a bus to go to the different stores. However, Weis and Giant seem to be alternating triple coupon weeks. Eckerd, CVS, and RiteAid seem to have the best Buy One Get One Free items. I'll go almost anywhere for free. :D

while you make (Reply to this comment)

some wonderful points and have a very well written, thought out epinion, I surely can't agree with the go to the store that has it on sale policy. With four kids and a full time job I work from home I don't want to waste what "free-time" I have driving around to other store, and with the price of gas, are you really saving money if you need to go miles to get to that store?
I have an Giant, WalMart (which is filthy and I refuse to shop at) and a Target right across the street from me. To go to Shoppers, Food Lion or Safeway would take me far out of my way and I don't need that inconvenience. I also have a son with allergies so I always need to buy certain brands of the staples (soap, detergent, shampoo, etc). I know that the sales rotate around to my must purchase products every three to four weeks to so I just stockpile until the next sale comes around. That's so much easier than having to go the store that has it on sale (unless you don't have the space to store it).
Just wanted to add my opinion.
Great job!

Nicely detailed essay (Reply to this comment)
by bonniesayers
I used to be heavily into refunding when I was in NJ in the early 80s. Every friday the gals at this office would bring in their empty cartons of products for me and another lady that taught me how to do this.
I had a file cabinet with all the brands listed and the UPC's, etc. When I moved to CA in 85 and got married I taught my first husband all about employee benefits and couponing/refunding.
At least he got something from the failed marriage!
Another thing to do is contact the company for coupons, many have the toll free numbers listed. For Kimberly Clark I can get coupons from several different product lines just by one phone call.
My main grocery store has problems with their dairy supplier, so I sent an email complaining and now the deliveries are on time and never out of the items.
I complained in an email to another supplier of soy milk in regard to the poorly constructed spouts on their containers that I got at trader joes. I never heard from them in an email but not even a week later I got three free coupons for any size, so I went for the half gallons when they were not on sale.
Last week I used a coupon that was $10.00 off an order over fifty but not including dairy, that stinks since I spend so much on that. I placed all the items first and left the 10 cartons of westsoy milk for last and checked to see that I had made the fifty, I was off by five bucks but the manager let me use the coupon anyway.
Than the print died in the print out coupons at the register and I knew there would be a $1.00 off eight more cartons on the soy milk so he went to another register, scanned them and gave me the print out.
I miss the triple coupons that NJ markets had, nothing like that here.
PS I hope to get the train early next week.

Be sure to rotate your canned goods. I had a can of pineapple that exploded in my cabinet last week. Ugh. What a mess. When I checked on the expiration date, it was about six months beyond the optimal use time.
