Go Big Five for great adventure in style

May 03 '02

The Bottom Line Trust me, I can not imagine your being disappointed in any tour Big Five offers. We travel and tour a lot and this is definitely THE BEST!!

We have had the wonderful opportunity to travel with Big Five on three trips to three continents and all rank as the best of our lives.

Our first adventure with them was to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands and it certainly started out with a series of misadventures. Our flight from Miami to Quito had been canceled but Big Five was right on top of things and had us on our way (via Columbia) right away. We arrived in Quito to find that their volcano was threatening to erupt and should a "red alert" come up that evening we would have to forgo our 45 minute flight to the coast for a 10 hour bus ride to the same place. Can't really credit Big Five with avoiding the eruption but at least they had plans in place in the event of this disaster. The trip itself deserves a different report but suffice it to say that it was a wonderment. Big Five, on our return from the islands, had also changed our return flight to avoid any problems again in Quito and put us up in Miami for a night since we had missed our scheduled flights out of there. I can only assure you that a trip that could easily have been ruined went off with barely a hitch thanks to Big Five staying on top of things and keeping us informed all the way.

Trip two with them came about when the Globus tour we had scheduled over Y2K was canceled due to lack of participants (like that was my husband's 60th birthday and he was determined to spend it in Hong Kong). We called up Big Five who advertised that their tours went even with only TWO participants. VERY TRUE!! We were the only two participants throughout Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore and must admit we throughly enjoyed having our own private guides and drivers all the way. This was really a FIRST CLASS tour and at the same price as if we had had a bus-load of fellow travelers.

Last year we again joined a group of 16 for a trip to Kenya (you can see my report elsewhere on that one) but even after our other adventures, this one goes down as the trip of a lifetime. While Big Five is now based in Florida, the name comes from the Big Five animals of Africa and I don't think they have their equal anywhere in Kenya. Within the first three days we had seen all of the "big five" animals including the elusive leopard. Guides were fantastic as were all the "camps" we stayed in. Even the long flight was broken down into two 8 hour stints with a day-room in London for 11 hours to rest up between the two. No problems at all on this trip but Big Five representatives where still always available if needed.

What next?? Well, our last continent yet to visit is the Antarctic and, if we really do go, it will definitely be with Big Five!! Feel free to email me for more outpourings of information. You can also contact Big Five at www.bigfive.com where you MUST request their beautiful brochures (pictures suitable for framing) or email info@bigfive.com.
